My fiance' and I are considering a move from Michigan to Arizona, particularly looking at Tucson. We are in our early 30's, have no children yet, but do enjoy getting outdoors. Our biggest questions about Tucson - so far - are the crime rate and what the small-business scene is like. We live in a very safe area of Detroit-metro right now, so we understand that parts of a city can be horribly crime-ridden and other parts quite safe. Is Tuscon also like this? As well, what can anyone tell us about the small business scene? I do consulting and coaching for small businesses and my fiance' wishes to get a weight-loss/nutrition consulting business going. Any suggestions? Thank you!

Both the extreme northwest and the extreme southeast areas (Pima/Pinal Counties of the Tucson Basin)
are experiencing terrific growth. If I were starting a business here, I'd look more to the northwest area, because economic projections
seem to show that the corridor from Phoenix to Tucson are showing steady growth potential, in general terms.
You should visit several times, at different times of year, before you make your decision. Tucson's population is much different
in the summer vs. the winter. You should be fully aware of all factors which may effect your business futures here.
School districts in the northwest (marana & amphitheater) have good reps., as do the southeast school districts (vail & sahuarita).
Good luck and welcome to the Sonoran Desert!

Here's a link to the Tucson growth plan. It should give you a pretty good idea of what areas are expected to grow the most:

http://www.tucsonaz.gov/pdf/csp-growth2.pdf

Essentially the most growth is expected to the NW and SE. I know that there is an enormous amout of building going on Vail - and quite a bit up in Marana as well.
