There was a Smuggler's Inn down in Phoenix at Park Central. I think it moved in after another restaurant closed called Coffee Dan's. There was this 20 foot tall steel sculpture in front called the Sun Worshiper by a local artist named Emery. I saw it the other day in someone's front yard.

I have fond memories of staying there while in the Marines. While with HMX-1, the Presidential Helicopter Squadron, we would fly the helicopters cross county when the President would come to the west coast. We always layed over in Tucson and this was the place we stayed for a
night. I remember the lush garden and putting green. The name and place will always stay with me. The staff always treated us wonderfully. Good bye Smugglers Inn, you will forever be part of my memories.

Default I Opened Smuggler's Inn Early 70's

Thank you for filling in as to what caused the closing of Smuggler's. That didn't surprise me, the owners were cheap and didn't like spending any money on the place, as they raked in the money. Initially it was owned by Associated Hosts, I don't know when it was sold or who bought it. The was the in place to be in Tucson because it was the only hotel on the east side. I was the Front Desk Manager from opening until about 21/2 years later. The story's I could tell while I was there; it started me in the Hospitality Industry and the funest job I ever had! From Smugglers I went to work at Del Webbs Newporter Inn.
I have very fond memories of Smugglers Inn!! I have Breakfast once a month with my co-workers on the hotel side, we always stayed in touch.
I do wish I have saved some of the brochures from there, when we needed to do another printing, the owners wanted new pictures and I was asked to be in the pool pictures...so if by chance anyone might have saved a brochure or two, I'd love to have one!! dihardknapp@msn.com
