I have been looking at the map and trying to decide which is the easiest routing from Tucson to Puerto Penasco.

Time-wise, is it better to go up to I-8, over to Gila Bend and then south via Hwy 85?

OR, is it just as well to take HWY 86 from Tucson all the way to Lukeville/Sonoyta border crossing?

Puerto Penaso.com suggests the later on their map link (http://www.puerto-penasco.com/images/maps/tucson.pdf).

It looks about the same mileage, but one has interstate for a good deal of the way by going to Gila Bend.

Thanks for the input.
Have a great day.
Joseph

Rte 86 is a good road with the speed limit set mostly at 65mph...I think it would be a lot faster than driving all the way up to 8....

86 is definitely faster.

No. The I-8 is not faster. Take Hwy 86 to Hwy 85 into Mexico.

Going down route 86 will shave a 1/2 hour of your trip eaisly, compare to the I-8 way, eventhough it has more highway to it, plus driving thru the tohono odaham reservation is a nice drive copare to the flat no nothing route down Gila Bend, only as you get close to Ajo there are some nice rock formations and the cops at Ajo always waitib to give you a ticket, going thru town is 20 and 15 mph and they watch you.
And now there is even a shuttle service from Tucson to Puerto Penasco (rockypointrides.com)if you do not want to drive your car and safe the hassle of insurance.
