Hi All,

I am considering a move to Sahuarita. Can anyone tell me about the infrastructure in the area. Are there Home Depots, major shopping ect. in town or Green valley? Decent restaurants, grocery stores, ect.?

Thanks,

jiminaz

Short answer: No.

Sahuarita has almost nothing to offer in terms of shopping or infrastructure. There are grocery stores, but not much else. Also, the schools in that part of Arizona are HORRIBLE, so keep that in mind if you have kids.

It is a nice little town south of tucson, however like someone before me already said, there is nothing downhere as far as major stores. the nearest wal-mart and lowe's are north of there on valencia just off the freeway in tucson. otherwise it is a nice small town, everything looks brand new downthere. Unless I retired, I would not live down there.

I have to disagree with the above replies. I think Sahuarita is a nice little town about 20 minutes south of Tucson. There is a Walmart with grocery shopping and a Fry's. There's also 2 Safeway's nearby in Green Valley. Unfortunately, the 2 things missing from the area are Home Depot/Lowe's and a hospital. Plenty of restaurants close by, Ashley furniture, movies, etc. You need to take a look for yourself. Rancho Sahuarita Community

I just moved to Sahuarita a few weeks ago, and I have to disagree with the 2 that responded right after you posted. It's all about perspective so I'm going to give you my take. I just moved from Seattle where any store you want is a quick walk or drive away. But I grew up on one of the Hawaiian islands where I had to drive almost an hour to even get to any good shopping (and even that wasn't that great). I'm still discovering this place and have been delighted in realizing that everything I need is not THAT far away. There IS a home store (Lowes I think) not too far away - like a 15 min drive NORTH to Irvington (South Tucson), in the same shopping center as a Target, Marshalls, Ross, Famous Footwear, JCPenneys, Food City (a grocery store geared toward Hispanic community), Starbucks...and many more. Green Valley is maybe a 10 min or less drive south from Sahuarita. The major shopping area of Tucson really is not that far away, maybe a 20 min drive - where the shopping options are pretty much on par with any city. Back to Green Valley since that is what you're asking about - the major stores there are Super Walmart (which has a huge grocery section), Safeway, another grocery store and a number of other smaller stores. There are some places to eat too which I'm still discovering..and some fast food like Subway and Carls jr. Green Valley is mostly a retirement community - so remember that, you're not looking at a major metropolis. If you're not coming from somewhere where you have everything at your finger tips and are used to hopping in your car to drive to your destination (like Dallas area for example), you'll be content.
Sahuarita itself is a really nice (and new) community full of families - at least Rancho Sahuarita is, I know there are a few other developments out here. It doesn't really have much character since it's a planned development with cookie cutter housing - but it's pretty safe, clean and has its own schools. I don't have kids - so I'm just kinda looking from the outside in at that.
A bad thing - cell phone signal out here is a crapshoot.

Wanted to update this for you as I just got done with a drive through Green Valley (looking for a self storage place). It has A LOT more than I originally thought. Aside from all that I mentioned before there are actually 2 Safeways, Walgreens, CVS Pharmacy, Radio Shack, all the regular fast food places, etc. No doubt OTHER than a huge home fix-it store like Home Depot, you'll find what you need. I'm kinda excited myself to know that all that is right there. :-) Definitive answer: yes there is decent & ample shopping...plus people are nice!

I'm not sure why the first 2 posters responded to your post...they are not even from the area. Also, I have to agree with the previous poster who said they were wrong.

There are other developments besides Rancho. Drive south closer to Green Valley and you'll be able to find homes with views of the mountain of Madera Canyon.
The 2 towns do have plenty of stores and such so you can have your basic needs taken care of. If your used to New York City or other big city living then this area is not for you.

I'm not going to list the stores that are in the area of Green Valley..previous posters have already mentioned them. I will add a couple they have missed like Ace Hardware, Beall's Outlet, Family Dollar, and quite a few mom and pop restaurants.

As for the comment on the schools being bad...that is a blow up your butt statement. The schools are decent...just do a google research on it if you have kids.

Here is a website for the green valley area

Here are some other websites that are not all about RANCHO, but you can't really get away from it...

There is also a small area that has houses and an elementary school that is called Continental. Its on the way to Madara Canyon. You may want to check into this area as well. Its nice!
Here is a website so you can see where its at...

Born and raised there. Lived in Tubac for years. My family has a ranch there and has for over half a century.

You're kidding right? There are many, many reasons that a person would like to live in the area. The mountains are very pretty, it's quiet, nice weather all winter, good hiking, great ranching, etc... But please don't tell people that the schools are decent. They are in fact terrible. And the further South you go the worse they get. By the time you are South of Green Valley, you might as well plan on paying for private school in Tucson if you want your children to be literate in English, let alone have any hope of going to college. It's a real disservice to people asking for information about the area to give them some pollyana assessment. The facts are what they are and the schools South of Tucson all the way to the border are some of the worst in the United States and continue to get worse every year.

Sahuarita today is much different than the Sahuarita of even 5 years ago. I lived there 5 years ago, and since I went back last week, the city park (Anamax) has new buildings and play structures, there is fast food restaurants, new school, new superwalmart, dollar store, furniture stores, new grocery stores, and LOTS of new homes. Green Valley is still retirement mostly, and it still has the small town feel, mostly because the pecan orchards make it feel out in the country. But I didn't see anyone mentioning the fact that 15 minutes north is Home Depot, Target, A huge new 15 screen theater, Marshall's, Petsmart, Olive Garden, etc. And the commute to the center of Tucson was shorter (minute wise) from Sahuarita than from inside the town of Tucson itself because of traffic. Good links have been posted here, let us know what other information you need.

As far as schools go, the schools were excellent at screening for preschool delays, and dealing with those with special needs. The curriculum is current and up to date and there are parents involved in the school, volunteering and participating. Test scores are not always accurate, because there is a large percentage of children who are ESL in the district.
