I will be moving to Tulsa from Dallas in May for a construction project. I will be in Tulsa for about a year depending on the length of the project. Right now its looking like I will be living around 61st and Memorial. I have a couple questions regarding the area, drivers license, car registration etc...

What is the area like around that part of town? I had to get an apartment sight-unseen.

Will I have to get an Oklahoma drivers license if my current Texas drivers license exprires in August or should I get it renewed in Texas before I leave?

Do I have to register my car after I move to Oklahoma/get my car inspected? I don't know the regulations in regards to what needs to be done after I move.

Thanks!

If your license from another state is valid, take a primary and a second approved form of identification and your out of state license to a Driver Examiner. The written and driving test may be waived if department standards are met.

Even if your written and driving tests are waived, you will still be required to take a vision test.

Upon establishing residency, your vehicle must be registered in Oklahoma. There are late fees if you fail to register you vehicle within 30 days of moving to Oklahoma or obtaining a vehicle. After 30 days you will be liable for a fee of 25 cents a day.

Unlike many other states, Oklahoma does not require a safety inspection for vehicle registration or registration renewal. Maintaining a safe operating vehicle – replacing worn brake pads, checking tire treads, fixing busted headlights...– is your responsibility.

Default 61st and memorial

Since I am not sure about the registration and license questions (but I would think you could just keep yours as a temporary worker) I will answer your location question.

61st and Memorial is a busy area of South Tulsa. It is 1 mile from a shopping mall and has a lot of chain stores and parking lots and a few independent businesses. You may have to deal with mall and school traffic on a regular basis but Tulsa traffic is not much compared to Dallas and other cities. It is not a particularly bad or dangerous area of town, however the apt complexes are sometimes hit and miss. You have pretty easy access to the three major highways. It is not a beautiful area either but you will be close to most anything you could need and be able to explore the rest of Tulsa on your free time. (hopefully)

Cheers!

Try using Google Maps. You can see a street view of the area.
