I'm really glad this question came up. My wife and I have tried every carrier imaginable. The biggest problem we had was "the surprise bill." Once a year, every year, at least, we'd get a bad bill. We looked into pre-paid plans and tried net10. It's been great. The service is as reliable as anything we tried. And, no more cell bills that are like mortgage payments. Seriously, net10 may be a good alternative to check out. Hope this helps.

All the carriers are going to have areas where there is crappy service. I've been with AT&T - Cingular - and now back to AT&T for over a decade. They have areas where they are horrible, such as around the Grand Lake area. If you stay in around the larger cities, you'll be fine.
