Hi! I am a 26 year old female and looking to move to Tulsa. I was recently there looking at apartments and got a few area's down but I am wondering if anyone knows of any good places to meet people and any good nanny agencies you can think of?

Thank-you!

As far as nanny agencies, check google. Otherwise, please look at the previous threads and especially the sticky of things to do and places to eat in Tulsa. There is a lot of good info there.

Congrats and good luck!

Please understand all the negative points that this city has to offer it citizens before you move. Tulsa is stuck in a.. " Good Ol' Boy ".. way of life. From the state leaders on down to Tulsa's politicians. This city is gone down hill for over 30 years due to it politics and the dishonest way things get done, or for the most part, get pushed under the rug.
Tulsa has a BIG meth problem, black gang, and white trash population that seems to grow by the second! The police have no sense of pride in protecting the good, hard working people that TRY to keep our once respectful city from spiraling down more than it has.
We have a ghetto population that has seemed to move like roaches to our once beautiful south side and now they seemed to pulled the living conditions down to their level.
If you are truly thinking about moving to a city like Tulsa, well the best of luck to you. Myself, I'm going to fight as hard as I can to preserve what little descent way of life is left and push back when I see it being lost and taken over by people who could care less!!
Tulsa can truly revert back to its once dubbed "The most beautiful city in American", but until a massive change takes place in the day to day way things are ran here and the previously mentioned system is rejected by Tulsan's that refuse to.. "go down with the ship",.. I would weigh the positives vs. the negatives, and make an educated decision based on facts and experiences of us who live here and want to love it again.

Good Luck

I'm always suspicious of people that sign up for an account and the very first post they make is one that bashes any city or area.

However, if you seriously want Tulsa to get better, it would make more sense if you encouraged the OP to move to Tulsa; to offset all of that ghetto of which you speak.

Thank you for your opinion. My comments were not to discourage anyone from considering Tulsa as a city to move and raise their family, I was raised here and have lived here for over 45 years and now own a business here.
I feel that I have the pulse of this cities direction by participating and caring for what takes place here. I just want anyone who make such a live changing move to take the time to fully grasp what that would mean. We have a great number of things to offer and we are making small strides forward, but if the rate of decline stays as it is, Tulsans will see the value of homes fall as investors buy up properties and move in bodies just to maintain an income for the few months that renters can afford until they are evicted, then the cycle starts over and the same element pulls down a once proud neighborhood. This a much greater issue that has not been addressed yet.

Interesting, and I'm not being sarcastic. I thought the housing market in Tulsa compared to the rest of the nation was in better shape because Tulsa didn't fall into the housing bubble trap so much.

The housing market was not hit as hard due to the fact that, as I stated, investors that only want income. Some areas were now being turned into rent properties and the tenants are not being properly screened, and background checks are lacking in depth. My family has been owned a real estate company for over 35 years here, this is where I base my comments from. I, myself own a contracting company that specializes in only..make-ready.. work. I come in after a tenant has left and make it livable for the next tenant. I have seen the different locations in our city that now have a BIG problem with crime that was not there 10 years ago. The decline of a once respected neighborhoods has increased as this trend grows.
I make good money off these types of properties, and I see my profit growing as this type of tenant moves from one side of town too the other, but I personally would rather not have to witness the mess that is left behind. The schools in these areas are being impacted negatively by this pattern. Be sure to research any area you plan on settling in be for you sign on the dotted line.

Hey openyoureyestulsa,

I am moving there too and I don't think OP was asking the question of give me all negatives of Tulsa. There are negatives in ALL cities and towns (trust me I have lived in A LOT of cities and countries as I was in the Military and not born in the US), just as there are negatives in ALL walks of life. BUT if you go into a situation thinking negatively you will find out the negatives on everything and not look at the positives.

To the OP:

Go to meetup.com and join local Tulsa groups. I joined up with Tulsa Singles, and I assume your a parent I have no kids but I did see that there was a Tulsa Single Parents group (there are MANY groups like walking, political, health, book clubs, etc,). I have been a MeetUp member in NC for awhile and I must say that I have met people who I would have never met otherwise. Plus each week there are various activities. So lets just say for example DFest is coming up and your new. Well more than likely you don't want to go to that festival alone. Well there's groups on MeetUp that are going so you won't be alone plus you'll be apart of an activity you wanted to do anyways.

Hope that helps, also I forgot but if you want to join a health class or pottery class check out the Tulsa Park and Recreation guide for Summer 09. I forgot the link since I downloaded the pdf file but you can google it. Theres a bunch of things you can do, just think outside the box on ways to meet people, since most people will suggest, at work, church, bars, etc. Look at things you like to do and investigate how you could meet those people and you will enjoy that a lot more since you'll be meeting people with the same interests and hobbies you have.

Good Luck

I'm not criticizing your history or family, but frankly it is a little uninformed in many respects. What you perceive as "investors that only want income" (what is an investor supposed to want? to lose money?) is in fact the natural life cycle of a neighborhood. Those people moving out of those houses that are being bought by investors are moving to suburbs where they are buying newer and nicer houses. Those investors are providing economic housing to people who are struggling to improve themselves. Of course there are those who are simply marking time till their funeral, but a lot of them really do succeed. Not all are trashing places.

Perhaps one of the reasons you see this as an overall trend is that that is where you work. It's like the shoe repairer who thinks Luchesse boots are crap because that is all he ever fixes, when the real reason is they are such good boots that they are never thrown out and replaced, they just get repaired and last for 30 years. All you see are the bad tenants. You don't encounter the many many many good ones who keep their place up, who keep their carpets clean, who pay their rent on time, and who don't move every three or four months.

And for your information, I too have been in the real estate industry for several decades and I too own my own business.......but I experience the market as a whole, not the segment you appear to be viewing.
