How exciting that you know Trong and thanks for the background information.
Yes, I am pretty excited on his behalf. It's been more than 10 years, so I wouldn't say that I "know" him. I couldn't give you his address or phone number, but I do remember him, and I still admire him. I'd lay down hard cash that he would recognize the paintings from the independent study even if he didn't recognize my name. It was very odd to hear his voice emitting from my TV, even more than seeing his image - and by the way he has barely changed and looks almost the same, except his haircut is more hip. I never really thought about how evocative voice is, but hearing him speaking I remember so many things from that time, like his voice was the key to unlocking some hidden vault in my mind. This is a link to a "getting to know Trong" video from the Bravo website.
I'm a neophyte when it comes to critiquing are, but I agree that the blue and yellow rendition was better. At least, it was colorful.
Well, more importantly, in my opinion - it was an honest attempt at representing the character of her subject. I agree with the judges that it was not exactly successful, but I think it was at least headed in the right direction. I feel the same about the "amateur" artist who painted the John Wayne Gacy-style creepy clown painting on a palette. Yes, the palette-as-canvas was gimicky, but at least it was an honest attempt at a portrait. I don't feel like Nao's connect-the-dots/constellation map thing was an honest attempt at a portrait, it was more like a stubborn protest. There's a time and a place for that sort of thing, and this was not it.
wow I must know nothing about art. That older lady with the fans and cables and the young lady with the lamp/vacuum/painting SUCKED!! And yet they sent home one of the best artist.......d'amn

I agree and Miles needs to button his lip. Tron is a class act and I respect him for not responding to Mile's insensitive comment. I didn't get the two butt pillows on either side of the Mile's bed project.

I thought it totally inappropriate that Miles was allowed to interject his point of view. I don't understand him being tops both weeks. True that I don't "get" him and his OCD issues but he is weird!!!
Tron is a class act. Thought he would be a contender to the end.
I liked Tron, too! I would have sent home the red wire fan lady. I thought the vacuum and half paintings was kind of cool...of course, I am not a critic, but I thought it was creative.
The whole time I kept asking, "What is the deal with the butts?" No one in the room knew what is was either.
Miles is creative, but there are times he should keep his mouth shut. He appears to show signs of Aspbergers, as well.
I am of course sad to see Trong go and although I am admittedly biased, I don't think his was the worst piece, although I have seen much more impressive work from him. He IS a class act and I'm proud of the way he handled himself, even when Miles was so rude to him.
Miles is almost a stereotype of an artist, tortured and completely self-absorbed, and I think the judges gave him a little more credit than the piece deserved. If he hadn't decided to nap on it I don't think they would have found it very compelling.
We both thought Abdi had the best idea for the project. I agree with the judges about Judith. I don't think she had a clue what her creation was about.

Abdi is one of my favs. Judith is still there.........I simply do not get that
I think he was making a statement about being unable to sleep because he was surrounded by buttholes.
