I loved all the seaons of Torchwood. I don't see the conflict with watching that and Doctor Who.

The first and second seasons of Torchwood are my favorite. They were cheeky and more fun; it's gotten much more serious recently.

I'm feeling rather put-off by Moffat after the finale.

Spoiler
I mean, honestly, why is River so childish and completely dependent on the Doctor? No, more importantly, why is she in jail now that we know she DID NOT ACTUALLY MURDER THE DOCTOR?

I think they want everyone in the universe (or at least the ones who matter) to believe The Doctor is actually dead. One of the precious few bits that made some sense to me was where he announced that he had become too "high-profile" in his constant saving-the universe-from-total-destruction-blahblahblah, so he needed to basically fake his death and fly under the radar for a while. I think this was a nod to the fact that the show had become too heavily reliant on "total doom/destruction of time/utter end of universe" type plots, and maybe it was high time they lowered the stakes a bit and made it more accessible as "good guy helps good people against bad guy" stories like DW used to be.

I think Moffat is trying too hard to show off how clever he is, and is producing stories that are too "densely plotted" to be enjoyable for a casual viewer like me. I know there is a large fanbase that enjoys dissecting every line and every raised eyebrow in every episode in hopes of finding something that no one else sees (I know because I WAS one of those people once upon a time), but Moffat (and Davies before him to a lesser extent) seems not to know when to make things simple and straightforward. Amy and Rory's timeline is now something that requires an Excel spreadsheet, and the writing for River Song makes Rose Tyler look like a bit player.

Even as I hope they will introduce a new companion (or two) as part of the next season and put the Williamses out to pasture, I can't help but feel the new one(s) will be involved in these same sorts of overly-intricate stories that have increasingly irritated me. And I would be fine with never seeing River Song again, though I highly doubt that would happen. I'd also really love it if they would quit making these season-long arc stories and just go back to the old style of self-contained episodes that can be seen in random order and still make sense.

Yeah, I like the old stuff better. But then I don't understand these new plots very well.

I thought it was established a long time ago that the Doctor called himself Doctor Who because his Gallifreyan name was unpronounceable to humans.

So I am confused as to whether or not he told it to Riversong.

I probably missed something because I usually do.

Me too, and I have friends who can't believe that I don't love her. After this finale, I'm so confused about everyone's timeline. River's, Amy and Rory's, even the Doctor's. The Doctor in the finale is the 1100-year-old Doctor, and "our" Doctor is 900, right? Or does that not matter anymore?

I am glad I am not the only one who is incredibly confused. This whole time-line jumping is just makes my head spin.

I don't like single-episode plots, but I think the best season in terms of "things actually got resolved within the season" was season one of the reboot. Single (or two-part) episode stories with an overall tie-in between them (BAD WOLF BAD WOLF BAD WOLF BAD WOLF).

I'm still really, really displeased about how Moffat is writing the Doctor, where he lets innocent people take the fall so he can go underground.

And now... we get a couple of specials and then nothing until 2012.
