Well he was in advertizing, ever see Mad Men? (I keep thinking someone will do a parody involving Daren Draper the hard-drinking, womanizing ad executive having to work hard to keep a secret from a wife with magical powers)
People aren't homophobic on TV unless they want to portray someone as some awful bigot, but homosexuality usually isn't portrayed in a positive light. Gays are often using over the top stereotypes, acting very feminine, have jobs like a costume designer, and everyone freaks out around them.
Not really same topic, but I watch stuff like Three's Company and some other 70-80s shows and almost cringe at some of the references I completley missed when they were on the first time. I laugh at how inappropriate some of the comments were and wonder the same thing about if that could get passed by now.
FYI- I say cringe b/c I missed it and now feel dumb about that, not b/c I think it was bad or shouldn't be in TV, But, I guess as they say, "It's a sign of the times" and TV is sure representative of the times.
I'm pretty sure that "McHale's Navy" will never make it back to broadcast because of all the dialog references to "Nips" and "Japs".
As I was sitting here watching McHales Navy on MeTV today, I kept hearing what sounded like a blank space in mid sentence and became curious that they were censoring a word out. I believe they were blanking out the word ***. I thought I would try to google it to see what came up, and really this post is the only reference to 'McHale's Navy censored'. I guess they are airing it, but only after chopping it up a bit. You were not far off the mark my friend! : (
LOL, this site has a program that doesn't even like the word. In case you were wondering, it's the word you actually posted that is short for Japanese, but now it's not letting me. : /
One of the most time-enduring animated series The Flintstones was actually sponsored by RJ Reynolds Tobacco for much of its original run. There were even promos of Fred and Barney plugging Winstons during commercial bumpers. Those were definitely removed by the time I was watching reruns of The Flintstones on TBS during the early mornings in the mid 80s as tobacco advertising was banned by the FCC over a decade prior.
