Yesterday I watched a documentary about making the original Star Trek pilots (as there were 2 and the first one did not include William Shatner). It seems that original character of Spock was supposed to be a depiction of the devil including a tail. This was considered unacceptable as the American public would not want to watch such show (especially in the Bible Belt states) and the tail was removed the character fashioned differently. So do you think the show would have had such a following even now if the character had stayed as the devil?

Not in some areas. But generally I don't think it would have mattered if Spock had remained the background alien they intended. When the reaction to Spock was as positive and strong, they toned him down a bit. When they immediately noted how much attention was focused on him after the first few episodes he was both toned down visibly, and given more screen time. The deep relation between Kirk and Spock happened as much from the actors themselves as something planned.
