It doesn't have to be currently ongoing, but I'm a fan of downloading entire series of shows and watching them. Here's what I've really enjoyed so far:

Lost
Game of Thrones
Boardwalk Empire
The Walking Dead
Southland
Falling Skies

What I don't like:
Reality TV
Anything MTV
The Wire
The Sopranos (just couldn't get into it)

I'm taking any recommendations!

My rec is for an older show - 6 Feet Under. It's about a family that owns a funeral home. You get to know the individual characters, how dysfunctional the family and individuals can be, and how the deceased bought it. There are clever twists, lots of tongue and cheek and other humor, and some poignant moments as well.

Oh and my second rec is for a western/sci-fi series called Firefly. Loved that one - another with a sort of cult following.

I see you like quality shows with a decent amount of action but don't make you think too much. You didn't list Dexter but that falls right into that category. Homeland and Justified also.

The shows I would normally recommend are Breaking Bad, The Shield, Brotherhood and Damages - but if you didn't like the The Wire and The Sopranos then you may not like them either.

Six Feet Under - such an amazing series

Also would recommend Breaking Bad and Damages - just keep an open mind on them - they are really great series

Another idea is to load your favorites into amazon and then see what the computer recommends for you

I loved "Boss" with Kelsey Grammar. First season ended about a month ago.

My picks are going to echo what others said...

Breaking Bad
Borgias
Shameless
Dexter
Californication

I will add a couple older shows...

The Tudors. Fantastic series on the reign of Henry VIII. They are currently showing it in syndication on BBC America, but it is much better to watch the original Showtime ones do to all the editing.

Battlestar Galactica. The SyFy Channel remake of the series was VERY well done and was an excellent series beginning to end. Even my "scifi hating" wife got into the show.
