Not sure if triology is the right word.
Basically, just a good series that has a beginning, middle and...END.
As opposed to stringing it out for cash untill it sputters and dies .
Leaving all kinds of unanswered questions in it's wake.
yes deadwood, yes Robin Hood BBC , I'ma'talking to you!
There was a mini series several years ago called "The Lost Room" that I really enjoyed. I was disappointed that it didn't get made in to a regular show. All of the characters were interesting, and the storyline was somewhat science fiction/fantasy. I rented it from netflix recently.
If you havent seen The Wire, you have to. Its the best. Its 5 seasons long though but is one of the rare gems that has a beginning and an end. I watch the entire thing like once a year.
Battle star galactica is pretty damn good. Someone suggested it above.

My favorite miniseries ever: Band of Brothers (HBO 2001)
Also very good: John Adams (HBO 2008) Mildred Pierce (HBO 2011) different from the 1940s movie and truer to the book Hatfields and McCoys (History Channel 2012)
Plus:
A cool TV series that wasn't meant to be a mini-series, but ended up lasting only one season in the US and 2 (brief) seasons in the UK, but does wrap up nicely and have an actual ending: Life On Mars (both versions--UK and US--are good, and different from each other). Both involve a modern cop thrown back in time to the early 1970s and how he continues to work as a detective in the 1970s world, with 1970s technology and no political correctness. Bizarre twists and speculation keep it really interesting. Great 1970s background music on both.
Series that started last year, and was renewed for this year, but is supposed to be a separate storyline/arc every year. Very strange thriller/horror genre. American Ghost Story. The whole first season has a beginning, middle, and end, and next season, a whole new story is supposed to start.
Definitely Lonesome Dove!
Another one that was really great, A Town Like Alice. I would put these two at the top of my list. It may be hard to find but most libraries have it in vhs. About 10 years ago I watched it 3 times, can not believe how it has stayed in my mind. Really good, my favorite love story and a lot of history.
