People that are too young to remember would never realize how popular they were. The main topic of conversation the next day. Roots, The Winds Of War/War and Remembrance, The Thorn Birds, Captains and Kings, Rich Man Poor Man, and North and South/Book 2. I remember watching the end of Winds Of War and wondering how long until War and Remembrance would be out. It would be 5 long years!
I realize they had The Pacific and Band of Brothers but they were not on network TV so the whole country wasn't watching.
What do you think would make a great mini-series today? What were your favorites?
The mini-series is a dead vehicle for network TV just like the network made for TV movie. They simply cannot compete with the production values and the lack of constraints of programers like HBO, Showtime and others.

Lonesome Dove was fantastic! Tales of the City too.
The mini-series is still around, but not in the 4-5 episode "Shogun" type miniseries. Networks lately have been having 13 episode one off series that they show in the summer. Harper's Island is a recent example.
I agree with the above posts. The miniseries is still around, just in different forms. The recent "Hatfields & McCoys" miniseries was excellent. So was "The Bible". If this had been the 80s the ratings for those movies would have been through the roof.
Audiences are too fragmented now. A measly 3 million people watching "Honey Boo Boo" makes that ridiculous show a hit and not the failure it really is.
It would be nice if they could bring back "The Thornbirds" as a mini series. There is definitely a market for some interesting more real life drama. (Honey Boo Boo, pathetic, for mini-minds.)
