Many people and TV critics seem to love Game of Thrones. It has now become to most watched HBO series ever. Do you personally think that "Game of Thrones" is the greatest HBO television series of all-time? Do you think it has finally surpassed the HBO greats like "The Sopranos" and "The Wire" which have long been accepted by many as being HBO's greatest TV shows?

None of the new dramas people over has surpassed the Sopranos. I think they get hyped up because of the geek types that permeate the internet, who might be alienated by a more gritty, blue collar show like the Sopranos.

First of all, it is like comparing apples to oranges. Game of Thrones is great (greatest) because of the story line, the locations, special effects, etc. While I loved The Sopranos, I think The Wire was much better. True Detectives might end up being better then those two. I think it is more appropriate to compare Game of Thrones with Lord of the Rings then the others mentioned (IMHO).

Lord of the Rings is a movie while Game of Thrones is not. With most movies you have to squeeze a storyline within 1-2 hours on average while TV show storylines have much more time and can go a lot more in depth because it has an entire season to work with. I actually think comparing movies to TV series is more of an "apples to oranges comparison".

Game of Thrones is now the most watched HBO series ever, but greatest? I'm never going to think so. I don't even watch it, though I have HBO. The Sopranos is my favorite, and while I liked The Wire, I preferred Homicide: Life on the Street, also by David Simon. Maybe I'd like The Wire more if I watched it a second time. There are only four shows I've watched more than once per episode: Homicide, I'll Fly Away, Sports Night, and The Sopranos.

I think it might be. I never liked sopranos, have barely even heard about the wire, have no idea what it is. You have to be seriously living under a rock to not know what game of thrones is.

I loved Sopranos in Season 1. Thought it was very good in Season 2. However, while it had its moments after that, I thought it was not nearly as consistently good after season 2.

Game of Thrones is excellent, but the book material is not as strong for books 4 and 5 as it was for books 1, 2 and 3. So, it remains to be seen if the showrunners can overcome the weaker material over the next season or two. (Those books have their moments as well, but are not as consistently good as books 1, 2 and 3)

Have not seen one second of The Wire, so I can't comment on it.

I agree that a TV series and a movie (or series of movies) are in different leagues. The point I attempted to make was that Game of Thrones involves all kinds of special effects, huge casts, scenes shot all over the world, etc. Much like a similar subject movie. Unlike a Sopranos, The Wire or Breaking Bad.

Hell, in the Sopranos they did not even film some of the episodes in the correct location, even though the correct location was close by. Like when they were going to bury the guy in the Jersey Pines and were driving around and got lost somewhere in PA in the snow. No way was that in Jersey!

GOT is a great story, but I can't put it above The Wire just yet. The latter just had so many layers, not just with characters and storylines, but symbolism (and how it relates to us personally, not in a fantasy world). The Sopranos was special for its time, but really was only great for its first three seasons before becoming muddled and inconsistent. And it certainly wasn't as "gritty" as The Wire, unless you count lonely Italian housewives pining for love while their goombah gangster husbands hang out at pork stores and strip clubs all day long.

Agreed. The Wire is still better and for that matter so was Sleeper Cell (which was overall better than The Wire, but benefited from being deliberately shorter). There are other series that are up in that stratosphere that don't get that kind of attention, such as The Americans. The Sopranos is in a second tier. Game of Thrones' viewership is a good indicator of its superiority (over The Sopranos) in quality, in this case, but I don't think fans of the Sopranos will acknowledge that from the start.
