Lawrence Welk was a well-known as a hands-on taskmaster, as well as having zero tolerance for anything but a squeaky-clean image for his show.

And yet... somehow...

"Toking" with Lawrence Welk - YouTube

Do you suppose that all during production meetings and rehearsals that week, staff and cast were just afraid to tell Larry what 'toke' meant?

The best parts are the beginning, where the announcer can barely suppress a smile - he knows - and the end, where Welk himself - apparently fooled by the 'Jesus' references - proclaims the song to be a spiritual!

OMG, love it! Every once in a while, if we happen to be in front of a TV at the right time, we'll put this on and watch a few minutes. Which is about all we can take. But it's good for a smile.

The world was a very different place...

I'm thinking poor LW only heard the "sweet Jesus" part.

Reminds me of how people made fun of Kate Smith back in the 70s when she appeared on the Sonny & Cher show, and sang the "Mother Mary" part of "Let it Be," and even Cher bowed her head.

LW was still a master, and I loved his number 1 hit, "Calcutta."
