Watching an episode of TNG right now where Dr. crusher gets trapped in a war bubble and is movi through realities where crew members are disappearing while no one remembers them other than her. Eventually, she gets to one where it is just her and Picard who is perfectly fine with the fact that his ship's bridge has six seats but only two crew members. I mean never mind the hundreds of quarters and whatnot. She almost calls him on it saying, "How can the Federation's flag ship travel around the galaxy with only you and me on board?" To which Picard responds, "It has never been a problem before." Awesome!

Almost as good as the clip show they did after running out of budget in season one or two where Riker has flashbacks to things he wasn't present to experience.

Driverless cars are about to become available. With holographic doctors the explanation of the space being available for mass evacuations was not totally out of hand.

First of all, the episode is "Remember Me". Secondly, it was a warp bubble.

Third, consider classic science fiction for a moment, such as the crew in Alien, Major West on the Jupiter II, or even Krag (the maintenance man Mary Goodnight put the chill on) in The Man With The Golden Gun.

All had a concept where the computers ran things but the crew was there, to be awaken from sleep (in space science fiction), in case there was a problem or some complex operation that required people. As Major West said in the Lost In Space 1st episode, "If you wake up and find me at the controls, you know you are in trouble.".

So, taking the story from that angle, two people on the Enterprise is conceivable.

And all those extra seats? In case such people are needed, be it androids to be activated, seed tissue to be grown into full size people, looking for new races to join so to explore the universe with, etc, etc, etc.

It was also the episode that tied TOS at 79 episodes.. The next, "Legacy" would surpass TOS.

There were far worse episodes than that.. In addition to the mentioned "Shades of Grey" which was a clip show.. "The Royale" is considered one of the worst episodes.

"Shades of Grey" was not entirely because the budget ran out, but S2 of TNG was during the 1988 Writers Guild Strike. It was only 22 episodes vs the normal 26, and many of them were rehashed scripts from the aborted Star Trek II TV series from the late 70's and reused scripts from TOS episodes.. "Unnatural Selection" and "The Child" respectively are examples..

Well, to each their own. I consider Season 2 about the best of the series and rather enjoy "The Royale".

The thing about Season 2 is that they had gotten over the rough bumps that comes with the first season (of any show), most of the stories were decently good, they hadn't yet fallen into the rut that a lot of shows fall into, Picard wasn't taking the actions in later seasons that were both removal from command potential and contradictory, and probably the best ...... the self righteous Dr. Crusher was not on board. As things go, they are all rather self righteous but it wasn't as evident in second season.

HOWEVER, that's just my humble opinion.

As far as rehashed scripts, two things. First of all, I believe it was Edison who said there were only so many original stories; everything else is just a retelling.

Secondly, retelling stories in not a bad thing if it is done well. After all, "The Inner Light" in 5th season ....... is a retelling of ST:TOS "The Paradise Syndrome". Ie, The Captain encounters an artifact of another world which robs him of his current memory and places him on a world threatened by an astronomical disaster. He is accepted by his new world, is married, and sires offspring. He is an inventor of new things for his world. Meanwhile, the second in command takes charge to try to understand the artifact, addresses the problem of the astronomical disaster. Why, both stories even had the senior medical officer arguing on the bridge about what to do about the Captain.

Star Trek gone crazy.....Frame of Mind episode, where Riker flashes back and forth from the Enterprise (performing main character in Dr. Crusher's play) to being a patient in an alien mental hospital (Cardassian plot). Riker does crazy quite well, nice episode.

Another demented episode, the one where aliens snatch various crew members off the ship and lay them out on a lab table to perform experiments, then return them back to the ship, Crusher figures out something is up and they piece it together by reconstructing what they remember while "out", the clipping scissor noises, lab table ect ect.

The one where Dr. Crusher goes back to her haunted childhood home, and confronts a spirt that stalks the women in the Crusher family tree.....yep, crazy enough to mention for the TNG gone mental thread. And let's not forget when Cardassians almost cracked Picard with the 4 light/5 light treatment, but after his previous experience with the borg collective, he was a tough nut to crack.

A Fist Full of Data's.......what were they thinking? Data does not belong in the old west at Tombstone AZ......just crazy. Even the Casino Royale episode was better than that.....jeez.

Lol. I have been watching Star Trek for months on Amazon Prime Fire tv, for free. I think I am almost up to season 5. Things start getting real around season 4. The story lines, acting, and characters get a lot more complex and dramatic/deep.

I'm about to watch the episode where Data decides to fall in love with a human. I thought my husband said he has sex with her too. This should be interesting.

The episode that I hated was late in the series and I think its well documented for its continuity break.

They go inspect some phenomenon that threatens the ship when they use their warp drives and by the end of the episode they decide to limit the use of warp engines and lower the max speed they use to keep the bad cloud from growing so fast. But the question remains if everybody else will respect that. The problem is never discussed ever again.

Actually it was addressed on Star Trek: Voyager. When that small starship goes to warp the nacells raise and lower. It was explained that was to limit damage to subspace when starships kick into high speed.
