I'm a little gun shy. I remember everyone saying how great MI-5 (Spooks) was. But then I watched it. It was actually pretty bad. Good acting can't save bad writing.
I've never seen Mi-5, just heard about it. The main character here is the guy who plays Q in the James Bond movies. Also, Mark Gatiss (whom I adore) is in it. Sometimes they seem to assume you know parts of the story, but that seems to be true of most British shows I've watched.

Is London Spy better than MI-5 (Spooks)?
Completely different.
This is much more character driven.
It isn't perfect, but Ben Whishaw gives a bravura performance.
I think it is worth watching just for that alone.
Agree, characters and acting are excellent. The writing has made each character a memorable individual, a rarity. Only caveat for some people: story has a strong gay sex component, sometimes graphic. Does not bother me, but there it is.

I heard the American version has deleted at least some of the gay sex parts: Danny and Alex making love the first time has been removed, I read.

I watched one episode. While the acting was good, there was so much gay sexual talk/action that I found it difficult to relate or even understand the storyline/motives of the characters. A particularly long segment involved an older man trying to blackmail or entrap the lead character into sexual acts. I found myself thinking that if the "evil" character was a woman of the same age and looks trying to seduce the younger man, it would be pretty gross and unbelievable. So I obviously didn't get it.

Wow. 'Murika! That's so stupid. The whole premise of the story is them falling in love.
