I wonder since it was on CBS as I remember if it will be on their new subscription service. Its supposed to carry the whole CBS lineup from way back to now, including filmed stuff from the 50's.
I have some of the DVD's and wish they still had all the origional songs.
Did some research. It aired on CBS, but they didn't make it. Universal Studios made it, and owns it. So CBS has no current rights to it, and it almost certainly wouldn't appear on their new streaming grab-some-more-money-from-the-public service. Universal did put out the DVDs a few years back, but they are no longer in production; only existing copies can be bought.
Another problem, and this is VERY common with shows from 25+ years ago: The music rights were only for the original airing on TV. To use the original music (soundtrack) for any future release, whether streaming or DVD, requires Universal to get everyone who had a song to sign off. With a show that featured so much great & diverse music, that ain't gonna happen.
Wiki says the first season DVD did have the original music, then the rest of the seasons they replaced it with generic "elevator-type" music (an exact quote from Wiki). Since the music was part of the show's fabric & soul, without it the odds of another release are slim to none.
This is the same problem WKRP in Cincinnati has. All that great music that made the show was only licensed for the TV airings.
One of my least favorite programs of all time, exacerbated by the fact that it came from Brand-Falsey Productions, my favorite TV producers of all time (I'll Fly Away, St. Elsewhere, A Year in the Life).
Maggie is one of the least pleasant television characters of all time. They let her get thisclose to an acceptable, if unnamed, level of anti-Semitism. And I could not stand the sound of Chris in the Morning's voice. Today, I do not go to Walgreen's unless there's no other choice.
I gave up on the show before season one ended. I only started watching again when Mike (Anthony Andrews) came to town with his "Allergic to the 20th Century" problems.
Way back when Netflix first came into existence I signed up and the first DVD's I ordered were "Northern Exposure." As the show progressed as the CD's became available, I bought the soundtracks. I still have them. I wish I had bought the DVD's when they were available but I guess I am lucky to have the music.
I actually visited Roslyn Washington several times and watched them film the show.
