It was announced today that Late Night with David Letterman was going to have Stephen Colbert as the new host. David Letterman is retiring and Stephen will replace him.

I heard about this too. Initially I assumed he'd keep doing his show (Colbert Report) since it films in the daytime in his Hells Kitchen (NYC) studio. But I saw that it's ending in December, and it makes sense; that's a huge workload for a comedian. Plus you run the risk of recycling your jokes.

Colbert is probably up there with Johnny Carson in terms of talent, at least to me. Others may disagree, but I will be watching to see how this goes.

I think the format will stifle his talents, but hopefully I am wrong. I will miss his old show!

Although TDS is bothering me - always about Crimea.....get some new material please!

I am interested in how this goes too. I think Colbert is a major talent. He has stated that he will be doing the show as himself, not as "Stephen J. Colbert." I wonder if he will use Colburt or Colbare. I actually will probably enjoy seeing his actual self. The Late Show should give him a format and freedom to show sides we don't normally see of him.

I have never cared for Letterman--or Leno, for that matter. Fallon might be great, but I haven't watched the Tonight Show in over a decade, and don't really have any interest in doing so. But I might check into Colbert's new show.

By the way, I read today that CBS had had Colbert in mind for this gig when they learned that Letterman was going to retire sometime in the near future. Letterman only signed on for one more year when he renewed his contract. When the announcement came down about his retirement next year, Colbert's agent called CBS. So, it was pretty much a done deal already.

I also wonder if they will replace Colbert's show with another one on Comedy Central. Interesting.

Yay hurray!

I don't think that he will have to be stuck into the old format - hopefully he'll bring some version of his own format with him.

A while ago Entertainment Weekly had a list of the TV Q of all the late night shows, and I think Colbert was at or near the top. I do remember that he was higher on the list than Stewart. Pretty good for a half hour show on cable!

Colbert in the Late Night chair will provide an adult, intelligent option to the Jimmies.

I'm really pleased, and yay for CBS!

I don't find Colbert particularly funny. He seems to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

I know absolutely zilch about him. The only thing I've seen of him is YouTubes dragged around on forums when he makes a splash about something.

I'll give him a chance. I can't stand Squalling Jimmie F and Jimmie K just has no depth or charisma, imo. If Colbert is obnoxiously political or childishly sexual, I'll switch him off. I don't know what to expect, which may be a good thing.

I like him, but I don't know if people realize Col-bear is a character and ColBERT is the real guy. I hope that ColBERT takes on Late Night.
