I watched it once and did not like it enough to even give it a 2nd viewing. Reminds me of a cross between Silence of the Lambs and Elementary mixed in with a few movie themes.Who thought having Bellamy Young was a good idea to play the mother? She's only 12 years older than Malcolm in real life and looks more like his sister. I am also bored with the tortured genius genre.

I wonder how long it will last.
This "tortured rule-breaking narcissist with a messed-up past" solving crimes while astounding all the rube cops schtick is wearing thin.

Agreed. Other shows do this same cliche. THE BLACKLIST comes to mind. In order to show how smart their rule-breaking maverick genius with a messed-up past is, they surround him or her with idiots.

Which is a shame, because this actually detracts from the tension. It doesn't add to it. Just think of one counter-example in this genre:

SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. Every antagonist Clarice Starling faces in that movie is smarter or stronger than she is. We don't cheer for Clarice because she is the sole competent character in a world of idiots. We cheer because she has to find a way to overcome antagonists who are smarter and stronger than she is. The FBI is a world dominated by men with power. Even her boss, who likes her, treats her with kid gloves. Chilton is openly misogynistic. Lecter is smarter than anyone else in the story and manipulating Clarice for his own purposes. And Buffalo Bill is physically far stronger than she is --- and in the climax manages to trap her in his lair.

One of my good friends, who is a 25 year veteran of the Army, actually had to stop the movie when the lights went out on Clarice and fast-forward to the end just to make sure he was okay. He couldn't watch Clarice alone in that dark basement until he knew she was going to be okay.

That is how you write a thriller.

In the tortured genius category, Malcolm Bright reminds me somewhat of Spencer Reid in Criminal Minds. Unfortunately, that's a difficult comparison to live up to, and so far Bright is losing badly.

Granted, it needed to be done to save all their lives, but it was like he was gleeful to have the excuse to do it. I find THAT kind of fascinating, and I'm curious where he goes with that.

I enjoyed that too, like he had some of his father in him.

I watched for a bit the other night. Not impressed. It was a bit over the top both in storyline and in acting. From the little I saw before I decided it wasn't for me, it seemed it could be similar to "Criminal Minds" (which I used to like) in that at some point nothing more than violence/sensationalist murder porn. I'm all about a good story but this didn't seem to fit the bill. Mindhunter on Netflix fits the bill better for me.
