Two that stand out include Moonlighting and Ally McBeal. The first two seasons were great. Something changed after that and the quality just wasn’t there anymore. Can you think of any other series that started strong for a season or two and then died down in quality?
ALIAS, Seasons 1-2 were fantastic. Season 3 premiere tanked the show, and it never recovered.
THE WEST WING, Seasons 1-4 are some of the best American TV of all time. Season 5 was bad. Season 6 was mediocre. Season 7 got some of the mojo back but still never attained 1-4's glory.
SMALLVILLE. I actually really enjoyed the first few seasons. But it got stuck in formula, then tried to dig out of it by getting increasingly ridiculous.
HEROES. Season 1 had its problems, to be sure, but was still a lot of fun. Then the story reached its destination in the finale, and it was pretty obvious that from Season 2 onward the writers had no idea what they were doing or why.
COMMUNITY. Once one of the funniest, smartest shows on TV. The last season or two was pretty painful.
TRUE BLOOD. I admit that Season 1 is somewhat of a guilty pleasure. But the show just went way too deep into ridiculous storylines, bad soap opera writing, and gave up disguising the fact that way too many episodes were just soft-core porn.
THE WALKING DEAD. Season 1 was truly great. The next couple of seasons were okay. Then the show fell into a rut and never recovered.
HAPPY DAYS. I actually really love the first season. After that it became just a typical sitcom. In the end, it became a really bad sitcom.
Most long series I watched so far (those with 4 and more seasons) were very good at first. Sometimes season 1 was amazing, then followed by good, but not so excellent one or two (sometimes even three) seasons and then the series would start to lose its quality. I think that only anthology series have the ability to keep the same level of quality for a long period of time. Otherwise, the longer the series goes, the more it deviates from its original story and the reason why people started watching it in the first place.
The Walking Dead had an astounding first season. Then they spent all season looking in the woods in S2 and.. The formula has basically been lather, rinse and repeat since then.
Manifest, a current show.. Had a pretty good first season and it's just gone totally sideways in the second season.
Sopranos - after Season 2 when Nancy Marchand passed away, she was the perfect foil for Tony
Maggie - went way downhill after first 1/2 of season
Man in the High Castle - First 2 seasons great and after that awful
Goliath - 1st season remarkable and 2nd was unwatchable
Sneaky Pete - went progressively downhill
6 Feet Under - got really tedious as show went on
Northern Exposure - I will never forgive Rob Morrow for leaving
The Walking Dead- after the big Negan opening episode (who he would he kill), everything went downhill from there.....stopped watching a couple seasons after that. It just kept going on and on........ran out of steam and story line. The first few episodes seemed really gritty and what you would image in a post-apocalyptic world. It was either in season 5 or 6, where it seemed that the cinematic production changed, it became much more "Hollywood" even the music made it seem more cinematic/Hollywood, rather than the gritty, real-looking way it looked in the first few seasons (there was also less Hollywood music and it was filmed more in the woods, so it looked a lot darker and realistic).
Heroes- loved season 1 and it was captivating and unique. season 2 became hard to follow and just wasn't as interested.
Westworld- just because it's fresh on my mind. Season 1 was really good and unique. Season 2 dragged on. Season 3 is entertaining so far but not good like the first season.
24- absolutely loved the first 2 seasons (some of the best TV series seasons I've seen). The next 2 seasons (seasons 3 and 4 )were good too, although not as good as the first 2. It went downhill from there. I remember there was a lag in when the season aired, so that may have taken out some of the enthusiasm. Also, I think they just ran out of plots/story-lines. None of the other remaining seasons captured the novelty/magic of the first few seasons.
House of Cards- had one of the worst final seasons that I can think of in recent memory.
Feed The Beast , I thought it was really good , but got cancelled after first series , it was taken from a Danish drama which are usually good , this wasn’t given a chance .
