I live in a middle class suburb and a lot of people I know prefer shows like Once Upon A Time and Agents of Shield in addition to reality shows. Very few people I know go for the superior stuff on HBO.

Why are soap operas, superhero shows, and reality shows so popular?

I don't see anyone of any age watching those shows in my circles. They do like HBO stuff like Chernobyl, GOT, Perry Mason. FWIW, I don't have HBO, but that's what most people talk about in my experience, as well as Homeland.

Must be something about your circle of friends. I know plenty of middle aged Americans who love both the shows on the major networks AND the shows on HBO.

Soap Operas have been waning in popularity, but there's still a degree of nostalgia for a lot of fans. I've been watching General Hospital since the late 70's and still watch.

People like reality shows because they're light, fluffy, and fun. After a long day when you don't want to bog yourself down with something too heavy or requiring too much thought, reality TV fits the bill nicely.

I can't tell you why people like superhero shows. That one befuddles me to be honest.

Trends change. Fads come and go.

In the '60s, there were dozens of Westerns on TV. Now there are ... any? Are there any? I can't think of one since DEADWOOD and HELL ON WHEELS ended.

Why are there 19 different versions of LAW & ORDER and SVU? I don't watch any of them. But apparently someone is watching, because the studios keep making 'em.

Studios continue pushing "reality" TV for a simple reason: It's cheap to make compared to traditional dramas and comedies. And the more absurd they make 'em, the more people tune in to watch.

I can't find any reason to be concerned about what other people like as long as "professional" wrestling is still around. Never could figure that one out.

Today on ESPN, I saw part of a fishing contest. They are really reaching to find new content. Can you imagine watching a bunch of guys standing around holding fishing rods while the commentators tried to make up something to say.

....and I laugh and laugh when people look down their nose at those who watch daytime soaps, but can tell you every salacious new plot development on Game of Thrones or Succession. Old wine, new bottles.
