Sclemeel, schlemazel, hasenfeffer incorporated. Is a yiddish american hopscotch game song. When you play hopscotch you sing this song. If you notice it appears they are playing hopscotch when Sclemeel, schlemazel, hasenfeffer incorporated is being said.
Wonder why no one cared what it meant in the 1970s and 80s. I guess it was just catchy, so no one cared
Yes they did. I saw the show first run and I remember people asking about it. I used to see interviews with the actors and one of the questions always was about the song. Also I remember people writing into TV Guide asking if they could give an explanation of the words to the song.
I knew a guy from Israel once and I asked him what Schlemiel and chlimazel meant and he said. Pretend you have a glass of water. The schlemiel knocks it over and it lands on the schlimazel! I thought it was pretty funny.
His name was Ofer which means "Bambi" in Hebrew (or so he said).

LOL! Or the schlemiel is walking along the street and falls into a hole in the ground and lands on the schlimazel who has already fallen into it seconds before. That's what my father told me long before the show ever aired. He and my mom spoke Yiddish to each other when they didn't want my sisters and me to know what they were discussing. But they did teach us a few words and expressions.
Or why she sounded like she was from Brooklyn, but lived in Milwaukee?
Laverne was really from the Bronx. She, Penny, and her brother Garry Marshall have the same funny nasal drone. When you hear the two accents together they sound different.
I knew what Hasenpfeffer was thanks to Bugs Bunny cartoons. Someone always threatening to make him into it.
