All Sam Waterston's characters except for the one he played on Newsroom. They were all self-important pontificating blowhards.

Howard Sprague on Mayberry RFD - a really smug, self righteous jerk.

.
Her so-fake, over-the-top phoney southern accent made it unwatchable for me.

It was awful even if her accent didn't bother you. It should have been on USA or CBS, it was so boringly, blandly written.

A post in another thread reminded me of another "most annoying TV character," the entire population of Cicely, AK, where Northern Exposure took place. I thought Maggie might spontaneously implode from her unrelenting hatred for Joel (subtextual anti-Semitism?), and I just can't -- won't -- listen to a Walgreens commercial.

Rusty on Greek was an annoying character. The show would have been much better without him.

What a coincidence - I borrowed the NE season 1 DVD from the library and am rewatching it for the first time since it originally aired. I actually like it but cringe at the fashions. Men and women wearing pleated baggy pants. Ick!

I don't think Maggie really hates Joel. I think she loves him and doesn't want to kill him. Remember, she's already had 2 boyfriends die on her, and she somehow thinks it's her fault.

Later in this series it was suggested that Brenda had a psychological disorder - something like Borderline Personality. I liked seeing how her coworkers and especially her husband dealt with her.

Agreed!

Personally I can't stand Peggy Hill from King of the Hill. She's an uneducated, narcissist, busy-body obsessed with proving how wonderful, brilliant, and special she is. She drives me nuts.

Does someone like Banya from Seinfeld count, since the whole point of the character was to be annoying?
