Just curious, what smaller towns (example: NOT Arlington, Plano, etc....) within 3 hours drive of Tyler would you recommend to go to relax, take in pretty scenery, shopping at local shops (something like what Fredericksburg has, but that is too far), visit parks, etc...? I'm thinking something like those Brazos river towns like Granbury, Glen Rose, Whitney, etc... but would those towns fit this criteria? Any info on this is highly appreciated. Thanks.

I'd go straight for Hot Springs, Arkansas. The drive is closer to 4 hrs. but well worth the trip. You can literally walk from your downtown hotel to a hiking trail up a big hill that's right behind dozens of shops, restaurants, and museums.

If your talking local Nacogdoches the oldest city in texas will keep you busy a city with population around 40,000 people have a lot of history.The city has over 20 hotels and hiking/bicycling trails everywhere.

Mineola and Gladewater are just outside of Tyler and they have good antique shops and little tea rooms, that sort of thing. Very quaint.
