I've been living in Washington State for a while now, and I really like riding my bike to work, buying organic food from the local cooperative, participating in community fun runs, community supported agriculture, and carrying around water bottles and reusable grocery bags everywhere I go. I'm all about recycling. These are things that my parents kind of raise an eye at, so it just makes me wonder how Tyler would be for my family. I'm an evangelical Christian, but not so much a conservative. We drink wine and other forms of alcohol, and have wine glasses and a big fat wine rack on display in our current home. I'm just wondering if that will be okay. I have kids, and I don't want them to be treated differently because of our cultural differences. I lived in Oklahoma all my life until moving to Washington, so I don't think most aspects of the culture would be *shocking* for me or anything. Just wondered if there were any communities or social circles in Tyler I would be likely to find friends with similar interests/views. I'm especially interested in, what, like a progressive church? I guess, I really like a church that is vibrant and focused on serving the needs of the community and the world, and a church where you don't have to be conservative to be a Christian. Does that make sense?

Thanks for your input!

LifePoint Church in Longview (no association with LifePoint in Tyler) would be a possibility, but probably a little too far away. I believe there is a church start up in the works in Tyler (Grace Point I think!) that is similar to Longview's LifePoint. I'll check with some folks and get back with you.

Green Acres is a very large church. After moving here from the DFW metroplex almost a year ago...we have still not settled in a church family. A great youth department is very important to us and it needs to be close enough to our home to allow our youth to get to and from. It needs to be vibrant. We came from Fellowship Church and have been unable to find that type of music and preaching. The churches we have visited here...are more "old time" than what we are used to. I'm very interested in seeing what people respond with.

You could try this church.
Fifth Street Presbyterian Church
It is part of the Presbyterian Church in America, the more conservative and evangelical of the two biggest Presbyterian denominations in the U.S.

On the otherhand you could try a church from my denomination, the Presbyterian Church (USA).
First Presbyterian Church of Tyler, Texas
The Presbyterian Church (USA) is more liberal than the Presbyterian Church in America. It has female pastors, allows more intellectual freedom for its pastors and is highly involved in social and environmental justice.

destin04,

Again, a little too far away for you but LifePoint Church in Longview has similarities to what you're speaking of. Music is Crowder, Robbie Seay, etc.

Check out www.lifepointonline.com to listen to recent messages. Might contact staff through website to inquire about the group that is starting a new church in Tyler.
