So, Chako, from whence did these alleged reports come? If you're going to quote, you must at least cite the source so the contents can be verified. Odd that all the alleged complainants have such Anglo names. Brett, Sarah, Robert, Bill, Amanda - good grief, even "Fabio" is I believe an Italian name. Methinks you have a rather fertile imagination and too much time on your hands. Your next contribution is awaited with great anticipation.
Stumbled across this site when reading the forums on Frommers. Really don't know what to think of it. It's presentation is extreme but looking past that I'm afraid there may be significant merit to the claims made. Shocking and disappointing.
I'll be in PR in April, not going to Vieques or Culebra but this is disturbing.
I went to the above link, saw the New York Times part, checked Puerto Rico Failures in Tourism, and came back empty handed. I checked the Travel part, nothing. I checked on Puerto Rico, nothing. Where is the part of the NYT's that has this information?

For some time now, I have been suspecting that certain people are trying to give the island of Puerto Rico a bad name, so that tourists can meander to other islands, like the Domenican Republic?
" WE HAVE OWNED OUR VIEQUES CASITA FOR 10 YEARS - WE HAVE BEEN BROKEN INTO 3 TIMES WITH MANY ITEMS STOLEN AND WINDOWS BROKEN - ALSO WE HAVE BEEN ROBBED OF OUR SATIELLITE DISH 3 OTHER TIMES. IT SEEMS THE AUTHORITIES DO LITTLE TO CONTROL THESE UGLY THEFTS - IT IS BAD FOR VIEQUES AND PROPERTY VALUES AND BUSINESSES. PLEASE DO SOMETHING SERIOUS." (by. Brett B.) August 2011
" This really is a major issue and a threat to the future of tourism and the jobs that tourism will bring to the island. Not only that but our community NEEDS to feel safe and right now I believe all we feel is that the situation is rapidly deteriorating. Drug addiction is such a major problem in Vieques and the youths are the worst perpetrators. Something MUST be done NOW!!!! Thank you for reading this." (by,Sarah G.) August 2011
" Our house was robbed repeatedly last year to the point we were forced to put bars on our windows at great expense, so whereas we feel safer in our house, we still feel vulnerable on the malecon when we walk in the evenings due to recent robberies." (by, Robert P.) August 2011
" Violent crime is out of control on our once peaceful island, we need an immediate increase in police. The present force is undermanned. " (by, Bill H.) August 2011
" It is VERY SCARY AND DANGEROUS here in Vieques now. Two of my houseguests were held up at gunpoint last week & so returned home to the states immediately (a month earlier than planned). They will be telling everyone they know about their awful and terrifying experience." (by, Amanda Myers) August 2011
" I would to be able to return to vieques but I feel as though I would not be safe there. It is a shame- I was planning on vacationing there this summer with family and friends but with the news from friends that live on the island and are moving off it due to the violence, we feel that it would not be a good idea to take such a risk. (by, Fabio B.) August 2011
" I was robbed at gunpoint in Vieques last year. I will no longer recommend it to my friends. Too bad in the past I have brought around 25 people down. I hope the situation changes. For now I am loooking for another tropical paradise. Should not be hard to find." (by anonymous) August 2011
Thaqt's some great fiction, direct from Angry Man's web site. Hey wait, is this Mr. Angry Man himself?
Name: Susan Ravitz on Mar 17, 2010 ( Please note I have sent this to ParadiseNO.com and the petition to which some of you have NO CLUE. So stay in denial. The website is full OF TRUTH. Sorry you few can't accept these facts. Anyone can do a search and see the 638 comments!!! The petition and the truth of these comments. Thank you! :-) We will NEVER go to Vieques again.
"Dear ParadiseNO.com: My Comments: I own a home in Esperanza and have spent several months each year on Vieques for the past 15 years. Two years ago my husband and I, while eating dinner at 7:30 PM with music playing and lights on suffered a home invasion. Two young men with masks and machetes entered our home and demanded money, which we gave them. We immediately contacted the police who took about 1 hour to come to our house. They took a little information and we never heard from them again. A month later, when I was back home in Pennsylvania, I contacted the police chief who could find NO RECORD of the event. I never heard from him again. A week later I wrote a long letter to the mayor. He never responded. Clearly, there is something terribly wrong with this picture. We suffered an armed robbery and clearly, the powers that be in Vieques did not care to do anything. On a timy island like Vieques, it is definitely possible to stop this kind of crime. PLEASE, DO SOMETHING positive about crime on Vieques! Thank you ParadiseNo.com More and more people appreciate you guys than the few in denial. Keep up the good work!"
I feel sorry for what happened to you. But you're either the author of paradiseno.com or are the kind of person that believes everything on the Internet. Vieques may not be Pennsylvania, but that website makes it look like it is worse than Somalia. Read my prior post #4. //www.city-data.com/forum/18365110-post4.html
I am a partner in the house Susie Ravitz refers to. In addition to the home invasion we have been broken into repeatedly. I lost count at 10 or so. We love this island, are all of left politics. I am a writer and have written fondly of it a number of times. You who see this as a gringo conspiracy: I can only think you have little experience with the island. Believe these stories of breakins, muggings, and unresponsive police. It's the simple truth, as anyone who has spend significant time here knows.
