My son is diagnosed with Pdd Nos. He gets tons of services here in NY and I am considering moving to Puerto Rico. I will be in the Corozal area. Please tell me your experiences with how this is handled in P.R. Will it be close to what I am getting here in the states? Is the area I choose to come to of importance? He gets ABA therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy and might get speech where I am now. He goes to a special ed school with inclusion classes. What is available in Puerto Rico for these children? What are your experiences? This is an issue that is holding me back.

My stepdaughter has been receiving treatment as a special ed student and I can tell you it hasn't been easy for us. Many if not all private schools wont take special ed kids (including those high functioning) because of liability and "disruption of class" issues.

Public schools will be basically only option in your case and depending where you live, its going to depend the level of development your kid is going to get. There are some schools that have a good special ed program some other dont, some others frankly dont care. Where my stepdaughter went they are using a pilot program similar to some used in the states where they divide the special needs student according to their level and skill and treat their needs accordingly.

My stepdaughter received basically the same things you listed, she was placed on a IEP, went to regular class with an assistant assigned to her all the time. It wasnt easy at the beggining( the process of finding her right placement) but at the end it work wonders.

Bottomline, my advice will be to call the school district before hand, tell them what your son needs are and what treatment and services his getting and see what they say. My stepdaughter went to Jacinto Lopez Martinez school in the town of Dorado and from my experience they handle this type of cases really well (it took them sometime, but it has improved a lot) I cant speak about other schools though.

OK! Great that you are near Dorado.

My mother provides these services and is one of the best if not the best on the Island she can help you with anything you will need.

Since I can't post links here, you can private message me if you are interested in her business. her business is in Dorado.

If you have the money, don't even think twice about the public school. Many schools will be able to accomodate your child's needs.

Hi. My family will be moving to Dorado in June and have similar issues. My oldest son was diagnosed pdd nos and we too are looking for the best school to meet his accomodations. He has two younger brothers and we would like to keep them together, if possible. They do not have any special needs. We have looked into TASIS school, but they have a waiting list for 5th grade. Do you know anything about the school?

TASIS is the best of the best. Keep trying hopefully a slot will open for 5th grade.

Hello, we just moved to Dorado, PR but have not yet found a local ABA specialist. Our child has Aspergers Syndrome/Level I autism so we need to hire a specialist in the ABA field to help him at least twice a week, if not more often. We do not want the commute to therapy sessions to become daunting for our child, so it is important that we find a good match who can help us locally. We are extremely grateful for any suggestions or advice...thank you.
