PDP urges voters to ‘damage’ status referendum ballots – Caribbean Business
Quote:
Popular Democratic Party (PDP) President Héctor Ferrer will recommend his party to vote in the June 11 political-status plebiscite, but write “no” on the ballot, which would technically invalidate it.

Ferrer said the PDP aims to stir opposition to defeat statehood in the referendum. His proposal, to be presented in the party’s April 23 general assembly, will request its delegates to write “no” instead of selecting one of the proposed status options, “statehood” or “free association/independence.”
Once again, the forces of colonialist immobility shirk from self determination. I foresee shades of 2012 all over again, statehood will win by a landslide but the colonialist sector will trot out the defaced ballots to argue that statehood really lost. The Tea Party/Freedom Caucus types will take any excuse to avoid having to address the status issue and nothing will be accomplished. Puerto Rico will remain a colony with second class citizenship, 70% less funding for Medicare reimbursements, and no right to vote for the highest office in the land.

If you can't choose between statehood or independence then stay home and let self determination play out. If you support permanent union with the US, birthright US citizenship, Pell grants, Medicare/Medicaid, Social Security, the FBI, FEMA, and all the other wonderful aspects of US sovereignty then vote for statehood. If you don't like those things then vote for independence. It's real simple. A toddler could make this choice.

I don't get why the PPD wants involvement in this referendum. It won't go anywhere. At this point Guam has more chances to become a State than Puerto Rico. Many Puerto Ricans think they can become a State but that's just a product of their inflated ego, to think US is just dumb and they are the know it all of the world.

the PPD has been exposed! of course the only option they have is to throw a wrench at any referendum for change, they want to continue the status quo and keep the masses dumb and ignorant.

the U.S. allows millions of Puerto Ricans to live under statehood in 50 states with full rights but it won't allow Puerto Rico to become a state because it doesn't want Puerto Ricans to live under statehood?....yeah that makes perfect sense.

its a conspiracy of the federal government and the airlines......they want Puerto Ricans to pay the airfare to live under statehood.........that was the plan since 1898....LOL

Puerto Rican's really believe they have the power to change their colonial relationship simply by voting for it. Its hilarious to read posts on the web saying that a huge percentage in the June 11th plebiscite will get Congress moving the island towards statehood. Many say, " Congress has been waiting 119 years for this moment". I'm not kidding.

First of all, few Puerto Rican's understand that ALL POWER resides in Congress and Congress cares a hoot about what Puerto Ricans prefer in a their yearly status contests. Secondly, who in congress cares if Puerto Rican's voted 100% for statehood? Thirdly, Jennifer Gonzalez , the non voting PR representative in Congress can't even get one Congressman to sponsor her petition for Statehood. Enough said.

I won't say Americans don't want Puerto Rico as a state. I just think it's not important to them. Nonetheless Puerto Rican's should press Congress to TALK. It must press Congress to express clearly what it wants to do with its Caribbean Colony of statuary citizens? If statehood is their answer, they MUST CLEAR UP THE ISLAND's MIS CONCEPTIONS of statehood and its obligations.

They MUST explain to Puerto Rican politicians that a 51st State will not have a separate olimpic representation and they must all compete with the American teams and carry the AMERICAN FLAG ONLY. The Miss universe contest ( which for strange reasons is very important in Latino cultures) must unite and become one, with Puerto Rico representing only the United States.

Transfer funding, the reason why statehood sentiment has grown by leaps and bounds since 1970, has to be explained that it comes from paying taxes to the federal government. To expect a free ride is not how this works. However, let me correct this, because a huge % Of people on the island live below the Federal poverty income guidelines, I guess free be's will remain ongoing indefinitely in the 51st state.

The question of language remains touchy, to the majority of Puerto Rican's but not to the second and third generation living in what is called THE DIASPORA. They have already been through linguistic assimilation, like all other groups in American history. I've heard some Nuyoricans and Disneyricans say, " What's wrong with those Porro Ricans down there?" " Its about time they started the transition to English if they want to be State and get more political representation than 26 other states. What are they scared of? They emphasize that Puerto Rican's living in statehood continue eating rice and beans, dancing salsa and take out the flag during the Puerto Rican Day parades.

Maybe the trick is to put people on the island into rapid English learning mode. To demand them to fill out welfare, food stamp forms , SSI forms and subsidies for section 8 eligilbilty in English only with only English speaking interviewers. Mind you, not those with an accent speaking English you could cut with a scissor.

Nonetheless Most statehooders on the island live in LA LA land and all what was said above must be explained and Make sure its INGRAINED for one or two generations hence , if statehood is the only option left for Congress.

If the Pro Statehood Party really wants PR to become a State. They better start by dividing their Party between Dems and Republicans. The Pro Statehood Party is a Hot Mess as it is right now.

There are not that many Democrats in the NPP and most of them are Joe Manchin types that barely fit into today's Democratic Party dominated by left wing progressives like Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren. Most Puerto Rican Democrats are in the colony party (PDP).

Secondly, in 50 years the US will be a Latin American nation. Most major cities will look like Miami today. Haven't you seen the demographics charts from the Census Bureau? Non-Hispanic Whites (aka "Gringos") are already down to 58% of the population.

If the Pro Statehood Party really wants to become a State, they have to behave as in Nation. Another question mark is how Ricky Rosello went to the Baseball Game against the US with a Puerto Rican flag and a PR cap. I mean, you want to join the nation but you do not waste any time to support your Island against the US. So patriotic of him. It shows most Pro Statehood Puerto Ricans just care for the money. There's is no real feel of integration in nation. If the US were broke, Pro Statehood Puerto Ricans would be the first to kick the US to the Curve. Their showing their gold digging tendencies. And The US notices all those details Pricans wont.
