Hafadai!

I was born in Tamuning, Guam in the late 70s, at the then 'Medical Center of the Marianas' which is now Guam Memorial Hospital.

My family left Guam for NJ when I was only 3 months old, so of course I have no memory of the place. Guam has always been a source of mystery and curiosity for me. My early baby pictures have what looks like an island paradise in the background. Pretty beaches, palm trees, etc. etc.

My birth certificate says that my parents' residence was Nimitz Hill, which, according to Wikipedia is located in the village of Asan. What exactly is Nimitz Hill? Is it a neighborhood in Asan? I can't find much info on Nimitz Hill on the web, beyond the Korean Air flight that crashed there in the 90s. My mom said we lived in a nice apartment building "a little bit up the side of the mountain". Not sure what that means, LOL. She says it was an 8-story building with a swimming pool, and that this building housed many of the hospital staff that worked at MCM/Guam Memorial. Does anyone know where, exactly, this apartment building would have been, and if it's still there? I'm just curious. I'd like to visit Guam one day and finally see where I came from and where we were living.

Thanks for any info. And if anyone wants to post Guam pics, I'd appreciate it. Or maybe link me to websites with more info/pics?

Howdy! My husband is in the Navy and we were stationed in Guam for a few months before pcs'ing to Hawaii. I can tell ya that Nimitz Hill is in the village of Asan, it is an actual hill. I think it is considered an area of Asan. But it is an actual Hill, and there are some homes up there, and I never really paid much attention to if there were any apartments up there or not. I'm pretty sure there are some condos as I knew a few people who had condos up on Nimitz Hill. I can tell you that there is a really nice overlook up there, and I think it's called Nimitz Hill overlook Park. I never spent a lot of time up on Nimitz other than going to the Naval hospital with one of my friends and to visit the overlook. I hope you find out more of what you're looking for. Good luck with it all! Guam is a very beautiful Island!

Howdy, Bluegrass_Belle! Thank you for your response! So Nimitz Hill is actually a hill, eh? It's kinda funny that they put that on my birth certificate rather than Asan. Very cool, though. Guam does look very beautiful from all the old pictures I have. I've been looking at Guam videos on YouTube too. Hope I can get there one day.

Hi, maybe I can help you out a little, hopefully I'm not too late. Nimitz hill is a hill/"mountain" on Guam in Asan. A Google Images search of Nimitz Hill brings up lots of images of different view and things located at Nimitz Hill. The condo building I am pretty sure is called Nimitz Towers http://www.nimitztowers.com/. They would have been around during that time. Now they house mostly Navy people, (a lot of submariners) and I actually have a few friends that live there now.

Default I might be in the same room you slept in as an infant. Lol

Hello, I know exactly the place you are searching for. I was so curious to find out how old the buildings were and came across this thread while trying to inquire. You stayed at Nimitz Towers. I had no idea it has been around since the 70's. ( I'm only 25 ). Surprisingly, Nimitz Towers is still up and running and full of tenants, and I suppose just as nice as now as it looked then. Nimitz Towers is located on Nimitz hill, Nimitz hill is far from exactly in Asan. It is it's own place in it's own area. But, I guess too small to be considered a village. Nimitz Hill however, is not considered a part of the village of Asan anymore. It now is Nimitz Hill Asan. Nimitz Towers is a two Tower complex. With 2 swimming pools, a play ground, a Tennis/basketball court. The area is very very quit. It is never loud. Although, I do wonder how it was back then. The towers are not condo's and I don't assume they ever were. They are apartments now. I see in a reply above that the Towers used to home many people in the military and employees of what is now Guam Memorial Hospital. That isn't much so these days. The Tower tenants ( from what I've seen ) are mostly small local families, young couples. Of course, some Military people but I suppose not as many as before. I love it here. I was just curious to find out how it was before. By the way, if you don't mind... What is your nationality? Were you in a military family? Which would be why you left? I would find it very interesting to know. As I love researching everything lol. Buildings, land, cultures. There are very few images on google of nimitz towers so I guess you can google them. If you want to you can add me on facebook. //www.facebook.com/alexalove88 or search by my e-mail lexxie_love@live.com . I find it very cool that I can possibly be in the same room a military baby left over 30 years ago for New Jersey lol. Have a good day!

Hafa Adai!

You, then, would be about the age of my son, who was born across the island at NRMC Guam. His birth certificate reads "Agana". <g>Fwiw, the last time I was on the island (2000) I had to go to a meeting which was to be at "Guam Memorial"--which I said of course I knew how to get to (thinking it had been rebuilt on the same site.) After some confusion, it was decided that I was (permanently) to be given "manamko directions". Manamko is 'elders' and the directions are given with reference to things that may, or may not, still exist!

The reason Nimitz Hill is so called is primarily because COMNAVMAR HQ is/was parked up there. And, at one time, Government House.

It's such a very lovely island...at least most of the time!
