I'm not saying that there aren't Puerto Ricans who live in poverty today, because there are. Even more so in the early 1900's through the 70's... But often what is interpreted as poverty, such as the condition of buildings, residences and streets is just Caribbean wear and tear. The climate is tough on most everything. Another consideration is perception, people living on the mainland are surprised that not everywhere in the world looks like Main Street USA.. You'll see most everything looking picture perfect in the high end housing developments but that isn't representative of the true Puerto Rican middle class standard of living and lifestyle.
