I'm going to be in PR from 1/10-1/16 and I'm trying to decide which would make the better day trip, but it looks like Culebra is the better option? We'll be staying in Old San Juan and we will have a car, but from what I gather, you can't take your car on the ferry.
You can take cars n the ferry but not at this late date. You need to book it about 4 months in advance. You don't need it though. There are tons of taxis (they are not really taxis though) to get around the island. If you really want a car you can rent one but it will be a piece of junk for 80 to 100 bucks. You don't need one though.

I'll be in Puerto Rico January 15-19 and was planning on renting a car but am now reconsidering. I'll be in San Juan and would like to see El Yunque Forest as well as Isla Culebre and maybe Vieques.
Do you think it would still be best to try to take taxis or busses around? I am pretty comfortable driving in new places.

When I mentioned renting the piece of junk cars. Those are on Culebra and Vieques, not on the main land. You can get decent cars on the main island from all the major rental companies but they are more expensive then in the states, like everything else on the island. It really is nice to have a car though. It's kind of difficult to get around without wheels.

Ok, thanks! I decided to book a car-only $70 for 5 days.
I don't know what WorldTravelingYogi is talking about. I just came from a trip to PR and Culebra and you can rent new cars everywhere. In Culebra we rented a Golf Cart because it's more fun and the island is so small that you really don't need a full size car. Many tourists rent mountain bikes (Specialized and Trek) to save $$$ and be environmentally friendly. Avis Car Rental has an office in Culebra with brand new Jeep Wranglers (2-door and 4-door) but I highly recommend renting from the locals to help the island economy. You can Google Jerry's Jeep Rental Culebra or Carlos Jeep Rental in Culebra both have late model Jeep Wranglers and Golf Carts.
Back in the 90's Culebra had only one car rental company with two Suzuki Samurai jeeps available. That has changed for the better. WorldTravelingYogi you need to go back and get up to date.

I lived in Puerto Rico from July 2010 to July 2012 so I guess they bought new cars in the 18 months I have been gone. My experience was 70 + USD a day for old Jeeps and cars that break down. This is on Culebra and Vieques not on the main island.
Two weeks ago I rented a Golf Cart in Culebra for 3 days and it was $90 ($30/day). I asked how much was the 2-door Jeep wrangler and they said $135 for 3 days. This was with a local jeep rental company and on their website it says their prices are seasonal. Maybe it can be $70/day at some point during the year.
Thanks everyone! I rented a car on the main island and a Golf Cart in La Isla de Culebra. The trip was amazing and we fit a lot in. I can't wait to go back. It happened to be Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastian when we were in San Juan on our last night which was an unreal experience.
Vieques beaches are pretty spectacular too. You may want think about this for your next trip.... Although I would not go just for the day. From SJU I'd fly (as early as posible from the small airport and spend at least one night. Try to pick a night with no moon or late moon rise and work in a bio bay tour. As for swimming not allowed in Bay...well let's jsut say that is the "official" line. Reality differs. YOu'll find many "local opperators" (basicaly island teens with kayaks and limited english) along the malaceon who will bring out the bay on a personal tour. Don't be supprised if they tie a kyak (or three) on top of your rental car and jump in the backseat with a freind. The cost is usally the same, but you'll have much more peaceful / authentic experience than the large "organized tour groups". I think your probably safer with kids anyway, as it was local kids who actually rescuded the shark bite girl and drove her to the medivac clinic, with friends racing ahead to find the "doctor" and the "pilot". I would also rent a car and try to hit as many of these beaches as possible: Garica, Blue, Navio. Dinner at El Quenpo is also on the hit list. Pricey but over-the-top fabulously delicious, rivialling any NYC resterraunt. Definietly rent a car. (arrange in advance to be picked up at the air port) Most one night accondations will be in town (noisey) But you could try Inn on the blue horizon, hector's, hix, Abreeez, W (W if you are ok with dropping to of $$), and another place mid island that has steak returant...? In my opinion the Bio bay is once in life time experience and totally worth spending the night on crazy lovely viequez..
