Very strong article about violent crime in PR and it's relationship to drug trafficking. The author also addresses the history of corruption with the PR Police Department and the inadequate response of the US Federal Gov't. to the drug traffickers who use Puerto Rico as a gateway to the mainland.

Also interesting to read are the comments after the article where many criticize the author for bias and false reporting. My experience finds the article accurate. Shining a bright light on the problem(s) is the beginning to finding a solution. Hopefully articles about Puerto Rico will become more common in the mainland media as the statehood discussion moves to Washington DC.

What's interesting as this article could have been easily about Miami! It is all true however.

It's really sad. I am glad I didn't quite know what was going on until I moved back to the states. The worst thing in the world was watching national news and the story was about one of the first guys I met on the island and how him and his girl friend were murdered on the beach in Condado. It had happened about 6 months before I moved back. He was a nice guy but we had lost touch.

I can't even describe what it was like to watch that story on TV. And all the other stuff I watched and read when I came back.
