Guam was an ex Spanish territory ruled under the realm of another Spanish territory, the Philippines, all collectively called the Spanish East Indies (also included northern Taiwan which has the city Taipei). After the Spanish-American War in 1898, Spain handed over its last remaining colonial possessions to the US: Philippines, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Northern Mariana Islands, Palau, and Guam. Cuba was granted independence first, and the Philippines in 1946 after freeing it from Japanese occupation. The US also liberated Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands from the Japanese, but they remained with the US.

Guam and The Northern Marianas are not in Asia...They are in a region called Micronesia.

Guam is a U.S Territory while The Northern Marianas are a U.S Commonwealth, and yes even though these islands are over 5,000 miles away from the U.S Mainland, the people on these islands feel very much connected to the U.S Mainland in many ways.

That's because they are British ...

Asking why PR, Guam, etc is American is like asking why Gibraltar, the Cayman Islands, etc are British. Why? Because the local inhabitants want to be and because these islands pose some strategic or economic value to the metropolis.
