Considering possible job promotion to St. Thomas Island, 7K monthly income, advice where to live, single women, live for less than 2K per month, close to tourist places
I have an opportunity to be promoted and live on St Thomas. I will come alone, a 46 year old male, govt employee, always involved in law enforcement (but you wont know, promise). So, I want to live a simple life- Ive read alot about the island, and apprecaite the realities. Not to mention it would be good for my career, even to stay a few years. So, I love the sunshine, beaches, maybe a boat, fishing etc. My income is good, maybe 7k a month. So, my question: whwre to live, for less than 2k, charming, as safe as possible, maybe close to tourists places(?)- any single women? 30-40? Is there any mainlander communities? What shouldnt I bring? I really dont want to bring a car- should I???

If you are promoted then why are they sending you to Rikers Island.
Coming from the mainland, you will not fit in, and you can take that to the bank.
You will see that on your very first day.

Have been living in STX for a few years now and I thought we'd made a serious mistake after the first few months of moving here. And, this was after carefully researching the island and spending about a year coming to look for property, usually on a monthly basis.
You will either love it or hate it but it will take a few months to figure it out. We love it - now, but it isn't for everyone. I could go on and on about the reasons we enjoy it (one main reason is catching our dinner from our backyard, especially the snook - yum!), but consider that we moved from FL, so quite different than CT weather.
If you're working on a Federal level (e.g. FBI, IRS, etc.), you might make it in the workplace as many of the govt. workers in those agenices are coming from the states. Ask your colleagues in your area of govt. work that have made the move and get their input. If you're thinking about working in local law enforcement, forget it, you won't make it. And if your work relies on working with local law enforcement on any level, well, good luck 'cause you'll need it.

What that really means is law "enforcement" is an oxymoron on the islands
And that is putting it mildly---
induhvidual, I've been begging off answers on this thread because of your continuous diatribes on every USVI thread about living here in general. I too have certain comments about SunsetBeachFL's post about working with local law enforcement. Too bad that neither of you pay real attention to the news and what is really going on here throughout the islands where crime is concerned.
As I have posted many many times on different forums, solving crimes throughout the USVI (and the mainland) comes nowhere near close to what the average TV viewer sees on 60 minute time slots. If you keep up with local news you'll see that the majority of major crimes here are actually rather quickly solved of late and many of them within two years which is about par where mainland statistics are concerned. Several "cold case" files have recently been resurrected and resulted in charges and detentions pending trial.
I'm in no way denying that we have problems here with our local law enforcement but compared to what it was many years ago, major positive changes are very obvious and the*"baddies" have been suspended - but you wouldn't know that unless you kept track where local news is concerned.
I'm happy, Induhvidual, that you have found your spot in Miami and that's all good and I hope that you will continue to remain content there for whatever duration. That said, I've been to Miami many times over many years and it's just not my druthers where living and lifestyle is concerned but I certainly wouldn't go overboard on a Miami forum denigrating it, as my perspective is very personal.
You were in the USVI for quite a short time, it didn't suit you and I have no problem with that. You are legion! The attrition rate for newbies is very high. Your opinion is yours but I do have a problem with your continuously dunning the islands in general. You came, you stayed for a while and you left with a bad taste in your mouth but what inspires your total negativity where prospective newcomer questions are concerned?
Despite your several accusations on different posts and on may different forums, I have never EVER soft-soaped living here. As much as you accuse me of soft-soaping that is so not true. I know where I live and have always, and will continue to be, very truthful and upfront where questions are concerned. Cheers!

I especially love it when the squad car pulls up in front (we're in a very remote east end location) and naturally they beep the horn, stay in the car until we come out because of the dogs and they say, "just wanted to let you know that we're watching out for you out here" - right... just casing the place is more like it. Fortunately, I've never had to call 911 and don't even bother to call when the "Haitian Cruises" come in and drop off at 4am. Just part of the charm!
You're also correct STT and I agree with almost every post you write. Maybe it is a bit different on
STT as far as law enforcement. And to be fair, I should have stated that we have met MANY dedicated officers that dislike people, like me, generalizing their efforts AND dislike the bad guys in their own department. Sorry officers, but please keep trying 'cause you're moving in the right direction!

If you're not going to be part of the solution and not call 911 then why even post? And what are the "Haitian cruises?" So that's part of the charm when many of them lose their lives? Yikes! Sorry, but I know so many folks like you who are intelligent and worldly-wise but just don't get it and are just like some of the locals who hear gunshots and won't call the VIPD because, "nothing will be done." That is SO lame.
Sorry if my little rant is offensive but as long as the ostrich mentality prevails nothing will change.
