The difference between States and PR is one pays FEDERAL Taxes. You can throw all the dirt and dust around you want. The US has a much stronger economy then PR. With a change in leadership America can be great again. Best of luck moving forward in meeting debt and pension obligations.

It's part of the debt. "Entitlements" Do you ever wonder why folks in PR do not want statehood? FEDERAL TAXES. Right now people are getting federally funded programs. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taxation_in_Puerto_Rico.

Federal taxes are workers largest deduction from their paycheck. You can throw all the dirt around you want. 72Billion in debt in Isla is the equivalent of 6 trillion dollars based on their GDP. Good Luck and their will be no bail out. Now a point to ponder what if the U.S. still was working in Vieques. PR would have more leverage? BTW laugh all you want at CUba but they are gonna become the new Singapore of the Caribbean.

Actually Puerto Ricans DO want statehood. Both major island parties favor paying some form of Federal income tax.

BTW what percentage of people in Mississippi are on welfare? Here's a hint, it's not much lower than Puerto Rico. The real welfare queen is a White lady living in a trailer park in Mississippi or Alabama

BTW #2: Regarding Cuba I have three words: Partido Communista Cubana and that party isent going anywhere. Cuba will become the new China, still an anti-American regime but propped up by the money of dumb Gringo tourists. 80% of Cuban resorts are owned by the Cuban military.

Top state for food stamps Mississippi: 22 percent of residents rely on welfare | Christian News on Christian Today, What does a actual state of the Union have to do with this thread? Also the rate of welfare on the Isla is 2.5 times of Mississippi. Once again the difference also is people in the 50 states PAY FEDERAL income taxes.

Why would the U.S. want to take on the debt of Isla?

Cuba was once the Las Vegas of the Caribbean. Speak to anyone from Europe. They do not want the U.S. to lift the embargo because they know things will change. Hotels will become more expensive. Have you stayed in Condado? Look at the taxes they whack tourists with.

In closing, Stop deflecting on the issues with Puerto Rico. You sound like a guy in Southern Italy saying the economy is great because their better then Greece.

LOL. You are really confused and misinformed. Is that where you get your information, WIKIPEDIA?

If Puerto Rico is a state right now it would get more entitlements from the federal government like the 50 states get and territories don't get. Puerto Rico as a state would also qualify for the EARNED INCOME CREDIT when they file the Federal Income Tax returns and low income and middle class family would get a BIG REFUND back just like in the 50 states.

LMAO!!! where you get to those numbers? do you know what you are talking about? obviously not.

The GDP of Puerto Rico is 102 billion per year well above their debt. Puerto Rico's inflation rate is below 2%. Their per capita is $28,500. The economy of Puerto Rico is classified as a high income economy by the World Bank and as the most competitive economy in Latin America by the World Economic Forum. In case you don't know who they are which you probably don't, (WEF) is a Swiss Foundation that studies and reports on all countries in the world in economics, business and government.

You should listen to experts and not rely on your negative misguided opinions of Puerto Rico....sounds like a personal "issue" you have.

based on what? Cuba is a totalitarian country for over 50 years. The Communist party still runs the show in Cuba. Cuba per capita is below $7,000 per year and their technology stuck in the 50's. Explain how Cuba will become the next Singapore when Singapore is totally the opposite of Cuba in government ideology and culture?

Do you have any idea about Singapore? they are are RIGHT WING PRO Capitalist FREE Market GOVERNMENT....Cuba is the opposite, a left wing extremist communist government but you say Cuba will become the next Singapore?

That's like saying Fidel Castro will become the New Donald Trump and the new Capitalist of Cuba......see how silly you sound?

hmmmm because Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory of the U.S for over a century and all Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens under the full jurisdiction and protection of the Federal Government. What part of the U.S. already has jurisdiction of Puerto Rico you don't get? is not a question of why the U.S. should do this or that, they already own the island since 1898. Its in their best interest and the interest of EVERY American Business that is in the island making huge profits to find the best solution....and big business is who runs Washington if you didn't notice.

You really should go back to school and take American Civics 101.

Cuba was once the Las Vegas of the Caribbean???? LMAO! yeah life was so great in Cuba under Batista that a small little army of rebel communists took control of the island easily with the support of the Cuban people....yeah the Las Vegas of the Caribbean for foreigner millionaires not the Cuban people.

Hotels in San Juan are not that expensive if you book it with Expedia, Priceline.com, Ortbitz, Trivago and the rest of the websites that offer great deals. Taxes in P.R. are no different than the hotels in New York City, Chicago, San Francisco and the other islands in the Caribbean like Bermuda.

You can't compare a 3rd world country cost of living to Puerto Rico which has a higher standard of living......comparing apples and oranges in your argument.

Things aren’t looking good for the Isle of Enchantment. Puerto Rico is in 3½ times as much debt as Detroit was in when it filed Chapter 9 bankruptcy in 2013.

There are extra taxes when staying at the hotels. I've stayed in all of them. From El Convento in Old san Juan right up to Ritz Carlton in Isla Verde. But yeah as a rican I have a personal problem with my home land.
