I saw a monument today erected in 1959 in commemoration of the Spanish American War, and it used Porto Rico. Does anyone know when the English spelling changed?

As good an explanation as any. Have to agree that Porto was/is an anglicized spelling.

Why that monument in Townsend Park says Porto Rico | All Over Albany

Works for me. English has enough problems with overly complicated spelling due to its tendency to soak up foreign words. Sort of sad seeing them add to the confusion by adopting the Spanish spelling.

Still if Porto was acceptable in 1959 when did it become unacceptable?

That's interesting, I had always believed that the Anglicized spelling fell out of fashion in the 1930s ... and was certainly long gone from official use by 1959.
