In PR, in the rural country areas, do most of the homes have mailboxes or not? Or instead, are most of those peoples with homes in the country required to have a PO Box to get their mail?

We live in a condo in Isabela. We have a mailbox, located at the complex entrance.
We still have a house in upstate NY. Our house does not have a street number. The USPS assigned us a " rural route " number. Years ago when we lived on a boat, we had to get a P O Box.

they do. some people do use po boxes.

what you will usually see is at 'el cruce' a wooden beam with 8 or more mailboxes nailed to it. this is where people go to collect their mail en el monte.

My grandmother has a house in a rural part of Vega Baja. The mailboxes for people in the area were down the road all grouped together, and address wise they were used as PO Boxes. Granted, this was over a decade ago, it could be different now.

MY DILs grandparents live in rural Vega Baja too. People there don't seem to have addresses. Like, her grandparents "address" was just Casa So and So. They have a PO Box. Her parents live in a condo, closer to town, and they also have a PO Box.

AFAIK the only places in Puerto Rico that have door to door mail delivery are in the highly urbanized areas, most of the island has PO boxes at their local USPS post office. The Postal Service is desperate to eliminate door to door delivery in favor of PO boxes and cluster-mailboxes.

In PR, in areas where the Post Office WILL NOT deliver to where you live, do they provide you with a free PO Box at the Post Office, or do they still make you pay for it?

no free PO box. the post office delivers to where it delivers. if that means a box on the corner at the bottom of a hill in a cluster with a bunch of other mailboxes - that's where it is getting delivered to. Or you get it delivered to your post office box you pay for.
