Retired teacher on limited income will look for studio apartment in PR.
Researching the areas as a single guy I find that san juan 00926 might be
a good place to start looking for a cheap apartment or room before I commit
to something long term.

Can anyone advise me on this area?
Rental cost for a simple
studio? Safety and nightlife in the area? Any good health clubs in that zip? I will learn
Spanish, but for the first year or so I will be limited in that language.

Looks like apartments are cheap, everything else looks like it might be
more expensive than the mainland? Gracias.

Because they need people who understand English for these jobs.

The post below is probably the reason why they don't hire more "ricans".

00926 is Cupey, basically a medium to higher income area with a few projects here and there. The area is not rough by any means. The nightlife options are limited with a few pubs in Ave Winston Churchill, but Condado and Old San Juan are just a 15 minute drive away. You do need to go and try it first for yourself; island life is not for everyone.

Most of the people here with some college education know English, some times even the Coqui's , Joey!

Sorry, but I didn't see where the OP was seeking to work in PR. Maybe I missed it but my impression is that he was simply looking for housing prices, nightlife and safety recommendations on a limited budget and did not seem he was looking to take jobs away from anyone.

Hopefully you (the OP) will get some decent advice before too long.

Good luck.
