Puerto Rico as a State would be like any other state.....the poor areas would be Democrat, the upper class districts like Guaynabo, San Juan and Ponce can go easily Republican and other areas would be a toss up.

Puerto Rico is still a Catholic Conservative Territory on social issues.....I doubt it will be a 1 party state for the Democrats. It certainly wouldent be Hawaii or Rhode Island level Democratic where Republicans are virtually extinct.

Trust me, if things are not working out the Democrats in Puerto Rico will be kicked out of power and vise versa with the Republicans.......Ferre and Fortuno were Republicans and they won the highest office in Puerto Rico as governors.....so Republicans can win in Puerto Rico especially if its by districts.

Historically speaking, the vast majority of New Progressive Party members are Republicans at the national level. Carlos Romero Barcelo, Pedro Pierluisi, Carlos Pesquera, the Rossello's (however Beatriz Rossello [Ricky's wife] is a Republican), and Kenneth McClintock are among the realtively few exceptions to this.

IMO Republicans could be expected to hold 2-3 of the 5 Congressional seats. The Senate seats would be tossups.

all I'm saying is that its a myth that Puerto Rico would be a 1 party system democrat rule in the island under statehood.

Imagine the current politicians of the 3 current parties in P.R. under 1 Democrat Party under 1 tent. Most of them can't stand each other and most of them want to be in power so they would go to the opposite party not join them and take orders from the party leaders who they dislike.

also, I wouldn't be surprise if you have Independent candidates that are not affiliated to either party.

Try telling that to the Repubs in Washington. They believe that if PR were to become a state, that ALL of their reps (House & Senate) will be Dems-which is one of the reasons they don't want PR to become a state. I think if the Repubs in Washington thought that PR would be a solid red state, they would be all for PR becoming a state.

actually, statehood for Puerto Rico is in the GOP platform since the 70's , I can't say the same about the Democrat party since the JFK days they have been very supportive to the status quo party in Puerto Rico and very supporting of the PPD party. PPD have many allies in the U.S. Congress and Senate and most of them are in the Democrat Party. Ted Kennedy was one before he died. He came personally to Puerto Rico for years to campaign hard for the status quo and candidates running for the PPD party.....when was the last time the PPD party in P.R. endorse any Republican in the U.S.?....do you think that's just coincidence?

Republicans have NEVER rejected a statehood petition of Puerto Rico because it has NEVER been petition properly to Congress of STATEHOOD YES or NO, a straight up or down vote.......what they do reject is any pork attached to any bill dealing with the political process of P.R. status in millions of dollars given to the political parties in the island to "promote" democracy in the island and its more money to the corruption of all political parties in the island......a reason that the PIP (independence party) still exists when they are not more than 3% of the electorate had has never won an election in any public office but they are entitled to U.S. FEDERAL FUNDS to promote "democracy" and promote their ideology....that is what many reject the pork attached to these bills....they also reject the amendments the PPD party petitions thru their Democrats allies in Congress to make the current territorial status have more sovereignty which is against the U.S. CONSTITUTION.

The thing about the Republicans compare to the Democrats, the Republicans like to do anything by the letter of the U.S. CONSTITUTION.....if they see any bill with amendments attached that is in conflict with the U.S. constitution they will have a hard time voting for the bill.

Puerto Rico is not going to become a 1 party state under independence, territory or statehood.....too many politicians in the island that don't get along for many reasons and they can't co-exist in the same party and everybody knows that every time you have a 1 party rule in any place is bad for democracy and good for corruption.

Puerto Rico had already 2 governors that declared themselves as Republicans and many members in the Puerto Rican legislative that have won regional and statewide elections in the island that are Republicans.

To say that Puerto Rico will be a 1 party state its a myth.............the reason a lot of PRO INDEPENDENCE people say that and you repeat it because that's their narrative: the U.S.A is a racist nation especially the Republican Party, they will NEVER NEVER NEVER take Puerto Rico as as State because they will always view us as inferior. The U.S.A is a NEGATIVE imperialist military force that uses Puerto Ricans for war and exploits P.R. for bombing practices because they are a WARMONGER Nation.....that's pretty much their narrative.

Its a negative complex narrative for the sole purpose to make Puerto Ricans resent the U.S.A and demand independence. They have failed to win elections in the island because they have been rejected by 97% of the island so that's the only narrative argument they have.
