My mother is half Puerto Rican and I have never been to Puerto Rico and would love to vacation but not somewhere touristy ! I want to meet locals and party like a local. How cheap/expensive is it to va action here ? What're the locals like ?
Your question has a lot of variables. If you are a tourist, most prefer beaches. Beaches in the san Juan hotel areas are full of tourists, specially during the winter months. Many stateside puerto Ricans who are savvy, if in the Isla Verde Area, head to Piñones. Its also an area of "frituras". At night regular Puerto Ricans head to LA PLACITA DE SANTURCE. Starting from Thursday to Sunday its filled with locals listening to music and eating in restaurants that are from expensive to reasonable.
Some head to Loiza Street, the new IN place of the young. LA JUNTA, a very local cafetin, salsa joint, with great appetizers is the place to go, but call first because music is not every night. Spanish is advised but folks are so nice they will accomodate.
