Saw lots about STT, STX - looking for specifics on STJ. Looking at a Park Service job. Would bring my small family in tow - 7 and 3 year old girls. We are pretty Nordic looking (blonde hair, blue eyes) which I mention because I have heard this can garner unwanted attention there.

I think there are some NPS housing I would live in - anyone know where the NPS employees live and how the houses are?

Super spendy for things like food? How bout local hardware stores, coffee shops, etc?

Is there a private school, and what is the tuition - can't find a web site - thought it was called Gift Hill School.

How is crime on STJ - heard it was almost normal there compared to STT and STX.

Is the ferry over to STT reliable? Once in Red Hook, does one cab to stores?

In summary, well paying job waiting for me with a government house (not had luck with that in the past - some have been pretty grim)...wondering if it is a place to take the family for 3-4 years.

We love to dive, snorkel, sail, paddle, hike, bike, etc.

DearWayOut West: Moderator cut: edit St John is the most expenive island on which to iive but if you're looking forward to a good salary AND housing then you'll probably have a wonderful time!

The STT/STJ ferry is highly reliable and presuming you'll have a car on STJ you can - as many residents do - take the car barge over for weekly shopping trips.

The telephone number for the Gifft Hill School is 340-776-6595.

The colour of your hair, eyes and skin isn't an issue. The islands are a melting pot of nationalities and cultures. St John is a truly beautiful island (crime is minimal) and its close proximity to the more "city" feel of St Thomas wil offer you pretty much everything you could ask for, given a good salary and housing included.

The very best advice I can give you is to make a pre-move visit for at least a week so you can get a feel for island living and also check out the accomodation, schools, etc.

All the best to you. It sounds like a great opportunity for you and your family. Cheers!

Thank you for the reply! I lived on Oahu for four years a decade ago, but Hawaii has most, if not all, of the Mainland conveniences...St. John sounds like it might be a fit. We'll see if it works out.

Appreciate the info!

The "good salary" part can't be stressed heavily enough...2 cents...
