There seems to be on this board, what I call , a FOLKORIC AND NAIVE VIEW , on how the states of the US were created.

1- All States were created as the East Coast moved West. The Manifest destiny was the philosophy whites used to conquer , what was then thought as, empty territories waiting only for white colonizers.

2- All conquering nations prefer EMPTY LANDS for their colonizers.

What about the Indians? Not a problem. Eliminate them as General miles tried to do giving them small pox infested blankets. The March of death was another way. Finally they were neutralized by giving them a strange sovereignty and confined to their concentration camps, upps, I mean Reservations.

***** All conquering nations want to settle lands only for THEIR OWN PEOPLE. Hitler invaded Ukraine and exterminated as many as he could for his program of LIBERSTROM or the resettling of Germans. Israelis are doing the same thing. They won’t make Palestinians citizens, they just expect them to commit suicide or leave. Certainly not to make them Israeli citizens. Isrealis after all, have legal rights given to them by GOD, and who can argue with that. LOL.

3- As soon as the western United States territories were occupied, their territorial governments were established by gringo colonizers. These were the ones who eventually asked for statehood, not the natives.

4- New Mexico follows a similar pattern as that described above. However, because it had a huge Spanish speaking population, Spanish was included as a second language in the state constitution. But when was the last time Spanish was used in the New Mexico State legislature? NEVER! There is a saying in Puerto Rico, “ PAPER HOLDS ANYTHING PUT ON IT”.

5- Although Hawaii and Alaska had minority populations with their own culture and language, the ones who determined statehood were the transplanted gringos and naval personnel. Colonizer political control might also explain why Hawaii became an incorporated territory in 1900 and not Puerto Rico.

English was always the main language in both terrotories. Some might ask, Why was this?

Because Neither of the native populations in both territories ever established a strong sense of national identity, thus they could be subjected easily and eventually will disappear.

6- Puerto Rico presented a dilema from the start. Here Americans found a full fledged people with an identity forged since the 18th century. Don’t believe me. Check out the English invasion of 1797 and Ramon power 1820 and the rest is history.

7- Although Americans tried to linguistically assimilate Puerto Rico since 1898, by the 1920’s they gave up, however it needed the island for its strategic location and agricultural investments. In addition Puerto Ricans were a very submissive, naive and grateful people but with a strong identity.

7- Due to the fact that Puerto Ricans never understood Americans, they really believed that America was created as a nation of nations with various languages, and cultural toleration, similar to what the European Union is today.

8- Most Puerto Rican’s never bothered to notice Jim Crow or the racist nature of the nation they so admired.
Even today to say American government is racists or imperialists is enough to be called a communist or an ungrateful bastard. LOL.

Where's the independence bill? If Congress is so desperate to get rid of Puerto Rico why don't they file an independence bill?

The US may not be interested in statehood, but they definitely aren't interested in independence. This much is clear after 120 odd years. Pobrecito.

you don't give a nation you won over in war your nation's citizenship if your plan is to give them independence.

The U.S. has fought many wars and has occupied and administered many countries and territories around the world but only a very few they declared the people U.S Citizens and applied the full protections of the U.S. Constitution. Puerto Rico is one of them.

You don't do that if your plan is to give them independence.

So, what's the point of this thread. That white people will never allow P.R. to become a state because we can't kill you off and take your land?

Your view is also biased, in that you don't recognize that EVERY country on this planet was formed the same way, whether that was in ancient times, or within the last couple of hundred years. You also fail to mention the natives that were peacefully living in the Caribbean before the Spaniards arrived and slaughtered them, eventually breeding them out. Your forefathers were just as murderous as the American forefathers. People love to criticize the U.S., as if our country was unique in it's development. It isn't. All of North America, Central America, South America, the Caribbean, were all colonized by native people prior to the Europeans arriving, systematically murdering the men, and taking the women for their wives. We all share the same blood on our hands.

If PR wants to become a state, it will become a state.

Yup the winners of wars usually treat the losers of war poorly.

The conquistadors were more brutal than anything we've ever done ... and that includes the actions against American Indians in the late 1800s. Ponce de Leon apparently had this gigantic dog called Becerro or something like that and the Spanish would go around Puerto Rico and the conquistadors would make the dog kill Taino tribesmen/women for entertainment - a 1500s version of Netflix so to speak.

Under Spanish rule there was no public education system in Puerto Rico. No public hospitals either. Certainly no Medicare or Medicaid.

Need I mention the Guardia Civil and their ruthless suppression of even the slightest criticism of Spanish rule?

Puerto Rico will be considered for statehood when, and only when,

The island fully fulfills American NATIONAL INTERESTS, not before.

1- Only when whites become a majority politically. I don’t mean folks who look white. LOL

2- Only when Puerto Rico gets off the dole. 51% live on federal handouts.

3- Only when 90% have English as their first language. Americans aren’t ready for an American Quebec or Cataluña in their body politic, and less so in the Trump era. .

4- Finally, only when, and if Congress agrees to give Puerto Rico it’s fair political share. Because of population the Hispanic 51 state will have more representatives than 24 white states.

WHS, either you spend your time watching dancing with the stars or watching chapters of general hospital on TV.

Look, the bottom line is that Spain in the 19th century was one of the least progressive nations in Europe. The Standard of living in Andalusia and Extremadura, just to name two provinces, were on par with its colonies, Cuba and Puerto Rico. How could Spain give PR what it didn’t have itself ? However we did adopt its snottiness, class consciousness and señorito Culture where well to do rich boys didn't do much but use young jibara girls to produce kids.

Expansion, be it american or who ever, has dealt with what they found in different ways, not good for the native people.

In order to move national populations into territories that are newly conquered, the people who are already in the newly conquered territories must be dealt with.

Hitler went full blast and just eliminated them.

Americans, either gave native populations blankets with small pox germs, walked them to death, and finally segregated them into concentration camps, later called reservations.

All territories, that were later made states were for expanding gringos and later for the influx of white inmigrants to work in expanding industries.

Puerto Rico didn’t fit the mold however because large portions of islanders looked white, the hope was to assimilate them, and MAYBE, be considered for statehood at another time. By 1920 gringos gave up.
