What?! Puerto Rico would be much worse than Alabama.

If Puerto Rico were to become a state it would easily be the poorest, neediest, most dysfunctional state in the Union. It's essentially a third-world Latin American country.

What's more, they would join the union with the same "let the federal government do that" mentality that they have now. They don't realize that you can't do that as a state.

Thank you for your post. And I agree completely with you! I didn't to be accused of bashing Puerto Rico again.

Yes. Making Puerto Rico a state doesn't benefit the US or its citizens in any manner, and would only add to our government's debt.

Does anyone really see statehood as a realistic possibility? It doesn't seem realistic to me given the linguistic and socio-economic gaps. Plus, its unclear that it would really help PR develop.
