I know a big business man in the island that is pro capitalist, low taxes and limited government and creates jobs and believes in the private sector and market that is for independence but dislikes the socialism that has hijacked the movement for decades in politics and schools.

When the leaders in the island of the independence party find people like Chavez, Castro, Maduro and Iran better options than the U.S.A. and support them, then Houston We have a problem.

they need stop smoking ganja and look at the southern border situation and cuban refugee swimmers to florida.

I agree but like the saying goes, you don't know what you have until it's gone. P.R. never had to live what Cuba and Central America lived for decades. They always had the golden goose with eggs and protection. If things get bad in P.R. (which is nothing compared to the Latino republic problems) all they do is get on cheap flight to Florida or the other 49 states with full benefits and rights the moment they get off the airport's gate. The safety nets are there.

Some people don't appreciate what it is to have U.S. Citizenship. You could apply at any job in the 50 states and be there the same day without filling endless paperwork or permission to travel, or to work or pay fees to the government, pay lawyers or be in a long line just to wait to be accepted or rejected or to have limitations. Add the safety nets you have access the moment you touch the state.

Now you understand why over 95% of Puerto Ricans reject independence. The sad part is that the 5% have a bullhorn and have lots of control in the public education (most work there) and local newspapers in the island and it appears they are a big force but they are not. They are just loud and have a platform.

This is an excellent question ... I can think of 27 trillion reasons why Puerto Rico's leaders should be looking at independence and a separate currency.

https://usdebtclock.org/

... And such a future doesnt have to be a lonely and impoverished one. Look at the Cayman Islands. Build it, they will come, and bring their $ to your shores.

There is no reason why Puerto Rico couldn't be a tropical Switzerland or Luxembourg.

Puerto Rico doesn't want her and they don't want independence. She wasn't even born there or live there. Keep her in NYC. P.R. is free and they already have a President. He is sitting in the W.H.
