The best thing that could happen is that the island gets a 7-8M quake, and breaks apart.

But without the United States Puerto Rico would fail. They rely so much on American tourist season. It's interesting because Puerto Rico driving and measurements are Europe.... They use kilometers instead of miles.

What’s this about Puerto Ricans wanting independence? Last I checked the vast majority were in favor of statehood. Their economy is far too dependent on the mainland US to sustain themselves as a sovereign country.

European?

You are aware that the Metric system is used in something like 99% of the world, right?

Plus, the system used in the United States is the Imperial system, which also has its origin in Europe.

The US would love to give them independence but it's up to the people of PR. Puerto Rican's don't want independence, of course not. The country would collapse into the Haiti level. They know that. It's been a voter referendum at least 4 times and the choice of independence never got above 5% of the vote.

Why would PR collapse to a Haiti level. Loads of independent Caribbean islands, some as small as St Kitts Nevis (104 sq. miles and 53k people) and they are way better than Haiti. PR wouldn't be any worse than DR. As an independent nation they will have more freedom to pursue their own interests and might even be able to evolve into a Caribbean Singapore (depending on post COVID economies).

Puerto Rico doesnt share a similar culture or language as America. Puerto Rico hasnt really offered America much outside of a (slowly disappearing) Navy location, and America never actually seeked out to the own the country. Puerto Rico doesnt want statehood and has only been a financial burden for Americans.

Puerto Rico should be given its independence just like other American territories have in the past like the Philippines and free rule for themselves.
Wrong. The US makes a killing from the perks it receives through The Jones Act. Puerto Rico has also supplied human capital via thousands of soldiers for the Armed Forces. Puerto Ricans have been fighting in US wars for over a hundred years. That deserves respect.

That Navy base you mentioned did tons of environmental damage and it cost the lives of many locals. It’s a travesty.

Haven’t the people of Vieques had enough? Read my comment above.

Maybe sell it back to Spain? Let’s face it, Puerto Rico is past the point of making it on its own. Spain can take it over and spruce it up. It would have the EU and Euro to back it up. They would probably be better off!

If the US keeps it, they should definitely do a shake-down, remove EVERYONE from government and start from scratch, with some supervision. If things move in the right direction, then make it a state. Oh, and REPEL THE JONES ACT!

Another fake news. Selling humans is against the constitution. The Supreme Court decades ago declared the U.S. government can't take away your U.S. citizenship against your will. This is just fake news before an election and to get Puerto Ricans in Florida vote Democrat. By reading some here it works. All it takes is a political gossip. Selling Puerto Rico is like selling New Mexico or a military base or federal land with U.S. citizens in it. A joke.
