Yes, but from what I know SC never had monkeys.
On neighboring Hispaniola scientists found monkey fossils about 5 years ago. If once upon a time Hispaniola had native monkeys, chances are great that PR too. Notice that monkey fossils were discovered recently and its only one of hundreds, maybe thousands or millions that must be in existence but hidden in the ground. There could also be fossils of different species of monkeys. Time will tell. Needless to say that I will not be surprised if some day a monkey fossil turns up somewhere on PR.
In fact, the island that belongs to PR and now has monkeys could be experiencing more of a return of the monkeys rather than the introduction, despite the current monkeys could be of a different species.
