When I go to Puerto Rico I like better the real Puerto Rico, outside the old San Juan.

I find Gran Melia Hotel in Rio Grande and Fajardo resorts at another level and that's where I would spend my money.
renovated, like el san juan. maria was more or less a knockout punch for places that had not been keeping up with maintenance, then new owners (jan 2017) kept the hotel closed for some time and spent a $100 million on it. hilton caribe will never be the "real" puerto rico (or even the real san juan) but at least it should be more of a premiere property for people who like that sort of thing. there's a smaller hotel nearby, geronimo, that is reasonable. perhaps if the normandie gets renovated that area will see some interest. I really liked the market that was in paseo caribe but covid killed it before it stabilized.
