I would consider Condado as well as Ocean Park and perhaps parts of Miramar and Santurce. Everything is pretty convenient there. There's the big Super Max at the corner of Loiza and De Diogo, the Freshmart near the Marriott, two Pueblos, a Walmart, many restaurants, and at least three museums. Even though her goal is to learn Spanish, there are many English speakers in the area because of the high number of tourists. The area is highly walkable. You don't even need a car if you are staying there and if you want to travel there are Enterprise/National and Avis in Condado.
Does anyone know if a long-term car rental (6 months to 1 year) is possible in PR with rental fees below current high prices?

Have to think buying would be cheaper.
Buy cheap older reliable brand that's popular. Sell after....
You may walk away with just paying transactional costs if lucky
Bumping up this old thread because after all this time my mom decided to take the leap, and after visiting PR a couple of times in the last year to investigate, she found a condo to rent in Gallery Plaza in San Juan. She's super excited about her new adventure which will begin in Oct.
I'm going to visit her for four days end of October. I'll be renting a car so we can see other parts of PR. Investigating places to sightsee right now. Also looking for some great restaurants in San Juan, from dives that only locals know to fine dining.
Thanks everyone for all your comments, they have been very helpful.
That's a great area. If I remember correctly, that's near Ciudadela with the Econo and the Planet Fitness. Cafe Communion is near there as well as Cafe Sidibou. I loved both of those places. There's a nice cafe on De Diogo (Hacienda...something). I hope she is happy there. It's nice area and a little less pricey than Condado.
I'm going to be there in a week to visit my mother for about a week and I'm trying to figure out the local goings on.
Is there a publication or website like City Paper, Village Voice, or something similar that notes all the local events going on in the arts scene, music events, latest restaurants, etc?
Thanks
